Does the Metaverse updating portion of GC not like ZoneAlarm?

I have ZoneAlarm installed on my computer. I can play other online games (Unreal Tournament 2k3, Vietcong, etc.) with no problem once I've flagged ZA to let them access the Internet.

I also flagged Stardock Central and GC when I first got them. No problems with SDC...I've downloaded the last few minor updates with no glitches.

My problem is when I try to submit a game to the Metaverse, the ZA prompt to "do you want to allow this program to access the Internet" comes up. After I check yes, the game ends. My score is nowhere to be seen on the Metaverse standings.

At first, I thought it was because I was not flagging the updates of Galciv.exe I was downloading. But with this last patch, I managed to finish two games without a new update being released (not really a complaint here! Keep it up!) and both times tried submitting.

The weird thing is even though I KNOW I have GalCiv checked in the ZoneAlarm controls to let it access the Internet, each time I submit a game, it brings up the prompt. Is there another file or something I'm not seeing that I should be flagging as cleared to access the Internet, or is GalCiv doing something unique each time I try to submit a game, thus fooling ZA into thinking it's a new program accessing the Net?

Any input into this would be appreciated! I don't really mind that I can't get onto the Metaverse...no burning desire to submit my pitiful double-digit scores for all to see ;p ...but I'd like to have the option to do so.

My next test will be remembering to disable ZA before I send in the next game I win, but I wanted to check here first to see if anyone else had this problem.

Thanks!

I use ZA while playing GalCiv. Aside from having to re-confirm that GalCiv can access the net after each patch (since ZA reads it as a Changed Program), I have no problems.

I had the exact same problem. That is because ZoneAlarm produces an MP5 hash code of every program allowed to access the net - if the program is changed (via update), you will be asked again if it may call out.

There's an option in there somewhere, disabling the hash check for a given program. Can't tell you right now, sorry - I'm in my Linux box ;)

Why dont yah just turn it off for a second, submit, then turn it back on and see if thats really your problem. Do you have a router, could it be blocking whatever port galciv uses to submit?

Yeah, I have a firewall router, but it hasn't caused any problems with other online games I play.

Tomorrow or the next day I'll have the time to play and submit a new game (I hate loading an autosave just to go through a game I already finished) and I'll give that a shot.

Klaus, I'll look for that option in ZA.

Thanks for your help, everyone!
