Little help for a total newbie to 4x space games.

First my experience: About 3 hours with MOO3, but I really hated the lack of feedback on why other races do things, so someone suggested picking up GalCiv.

So, it seems Im back in the same boat as when I started trying to play Moo3. I just dont know what exactly it is Im supposed to be doing at the beginning of the game. I often feel that Im just aimlessly pushing a ship or two around the screen.

So far, I've sent out the scout (I think it's the scout, it finds anomolies and space junk) out into the star field and point it to every little anomaly I come across, and every piece of spacejunk I see, but after a while I dont know what I've done but it goes on some sort of cruise control and just starts wandering and finding things itself. So this scout has found me a couple other ships, but when I click on them and tell them to move, I get a dialog telling me that they are too far out of range and that I should return them to my sector (or a similar message), but I have no idea how to get them to go back to my sector.

Then onto the colony ship. Generally I just send them to the closest system (usually another yellow planet looking object on the screen) and colonize one of the planets. But which one should I colonize, does it even matter? Should I be sending this colony ship far away to colonize or colonize real close to where it starts?

So as you can see Im a total newb to space 4x games, and the pdf manual is not really helping me all that much (though i tried to read it from the screen and I really dont retain much info when reading from the screen), so Im printing it out, but in the first 20 pages so far printed, it's not doing a whole lot to tell me early game of what Im supposed to be doing.

Are there any sites, pages etc that give good starting play information for a total newbie.

Thanks,
LakeSide

If you double click your "scout" (actually it's called "survey ship") you have an option there for Auto Survey which will send him off on his merry way to find the space junk, etc. When he finds a ship far away from your home system and you can't seem to move it, just select it and right-click on your home system and he'll fly there.

Colony ship: If you click the stars you'll see a list of planets in that system on the right of the screen. You'll want to try to colonize the planets with the highest number (I always shoot for 15+). Check out all the systems near you to find the highest planet quality.

I'm a newbie, too...learning this stuff as I go. I'm looking forward to a good manual....someday. Don't use the .pdf; some info is wrong, and as you said, the quality is poor. Check through these threads for a link to Javascout's page. There's good info there.

Break the bank leasing colony ships and race for the yellow spots on the map. I even scout with colony ships if I have to at the first of the game.
