noob Questions

Hi all - I recently purchased the Gal Civ Deluxe edition, and am in the middle of my first game at home on the largest galaxy size, and have run across a couple questions that I couldn't find in the manual I downloaded. Hopefully someone can help me out here :)

1. After I build a colony ship its in orbit around the planet. And if I double-click on the ship and launch it, all works well. My question is, how do I put a colony ship BACK in orbit around a planet? Whenever I try to do that, it just keeps acting like I want to colonize that star system, but I don't. I've tried using "guard" or "sentry", but that doesn't seem to do it either. Surely there must be a way that I just can't figure out.

2. I've noticed that there is an official patch download that includes the "Expanded Universe expansion". What is the "Expanded Universe expansion"? Is this something I want? Just wondering.

3. Also, is there a way to tell what version of the game I'm running? Since I've got the "Deluxe" version, I'm wondering if it's already patched to the latest version, but I don't know how to find my game's current version.

4. On the diplomacy screen, when I'm speaking to someone, sometimes I'm toying around with ideas to respond with and click on something, but then change my mind. However, let's say I clicked on a piece of technology - I can't find a way to clear out that selection. It seems that I just have to totally leave the diplomacy screen in order to NOT send that technology to the person I was speaking to. Is there some way to clear your screen without aborting diplomacy?

Thanks all - I know n00bs can be annoying to veteran players of the game. So, any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated :)

Also, is there a way to rename the governors from unspacey names like, "Mr. Ford". I'd rather be able to personalize their names, but I can't figure out how.

Re question #4: when you click on a tech and it appears in the bottom left pane, if you, for whatever reason, decide against sending that tech, just doubleclick it - it should disappear from the bottom left pane and go back to your normal tech list.

I myself just purchased the Deluxe Edition and I can tell you now: No, it isn't fully updated. Download Stardock Central or visit www.stardock.com to get the updates. (I would recommend downloading and installing the Stardock Central prog, makes everything easier).

As to the colony ship problem ...I haven't a clue, I've never built one that I wanted to just orbit before. If I don't have a world for it to goto at that time, I'll just replant all those colonists on some other world of mine that needs them for the extra production/income they'll bring. If you are only putting them on there to increase morale, then I would advise using Transports instead of Colony ships as Transports are reusable and plus have the added benefit of being able to invade other planets!

1) You can't put a colony ship back into orbit. There usually isn't a reason to, anyway. Either you're going to colonize a planet, in which case you should go do it, or you're not, so you don't need the ship.

2) Expanded Universe was a major update they made to the game a while back. The Delux Edition certainly comes with a newer version than that.

3) I think the version number is somewhere on the options screen (the one that comes up when you hit Esc). If you download and install Stardock Central you can always make sure you're running the latest version (which I believe is even more recent than the one that's on the website).

4) When you click on a technology it moves from the list of stuff you have to the list of stuff you're willing to give. Click on it again to move it back. If you haven't already noticed, the text in the middle is sometimes yellow and sometimes green. If it's green, that means the aliens will accept your offer if you click "Send".

As far as I know there's no way to rename the Governors.

Hi VagabondNomad, welcome to the world of GalCiv.

I'm not really a veteran althoug I have had and played the game for quite a while, but in here most questions are answered politely, so don't be afraid to ask.

As to your Q's, Ill try to answer some of them.
1: Unfortuanately there are no way of re-orbiting a colony ship, once they are launched you can't land them again without colonising a planet. If you colonise one of your own planets the population from the colony ship is added to the existing population. This can be usefull if you have a high PQ planet with to few people and a low PQ planet with to many people in the same system, and you want to move some of them.

3: When you load the game, and on the save-load menu the version number is displaied. Alternatively you can check it in Stardock Central.

4: To remove something from that list on the diplomatic screen just click on it in the list.

Thanks everyone for the excellent responses :)

That's too bad on the re-orbiting a colony ship - oh well - it's not that big a deal.

That great information on how the diplomacy screen works - this will definitely make a difference on my diplomacy screen.

I'll have to pay more attention to the load screen for the version number.

I sort of figured you couldn't rename the governors, but it was worth asking anyway.

On the expanded universe, once I finish my current game I'll download stardock (whatever that is) - and apply the patch. I'm wary of applying the patch in the middle of my game for fear that there could be compatability issues.

Thanks again, everyone. You're all very cool :HOT:

Correct. Don't patch during a game. You will get CTD.

SDC also tells you what version number you have.

Thanks guys, for the info. It looks like my version is 1.04, from the Save / Load screen. I'm anxious to finish up my current game so I can patch and see what new goodies show up :)
