my games are kind of one-dimensional

Granted I have only played a dozen or so games, but so far my gaming experience has been pretty similar every time (oh and I love the game!).
1) Mad rush to colonize
2) One or two AIs totally eclipse the other AIs, so much so the other AIs end up being mostly nonfactors the entire game.
3) The AIs who won the colony grab race to get big ships as quickly as possible. (I have seen races like the Altarian's branch out a little and get medical stuff, but it doesn't seem to slow them down much at all).
4) As soon as the AI has a military advantage, be it technical or material, they usually end up attacking me and the weak AIs.
To counter this so far I have had to race through the ship upgrade process as quickly as possible. If I am not close to par with the AI in ship technology they always attack me when they take the lead.
I keep thinking I am going to establish a trade empire, but falling behind militarily isn't an option. Part of the problem is as soon as the AI starts pumping out frigates and up they can pretty much clear any unguarded starbases and lightly guarded planets with ease.
I keep thinking I can turtle up with a network of starbases with heavily upgraded military equipment, but it takes years to get a nice starbase going and they die very quickly to capital ships.
How has everyone else's play experience been? I am sure my experience is partly because of the style i have developed and the initial picks I usually make (PQ, federalist and usually 10% military production). I take out mass loans on colony ships and expand extremely quickly, but it takes a long time to build up enough infrastructure to support a big empire. Especially if I am pouring as much into research as I seem to need to keep up with the AI.
In my more successful games I have been able to fend off whichever AI attacks me first, usually taking a few of its planets to make it stop attacking. But I always have to bust out high % military production to do it. Unfortunately a couple turns neglecting research ends up putting me behind the AI, which usually triggers any other AI doing well to attack me while I am recovering from the last war (yes I know that is a smart tactic!).
I usually play on large maps with all intelligent AI.
