A Sad, Sad Day.....

A murder in our small town...

Well, as you've heard from carebear07 already said yesterday, a tragic incident happened and I've tracked down the story that was published so here it is:

AMANDA -- A man who was dedicated to his community and volunteered countless hours to make it a better, safer place was killed Monday.

Randy Miller Sr., 47, was found shot and lying face down in the yard between his home and barn. He was declared dead at Berger Hospital in Circleville shortly after 5 p.m.

His son, Randy Miller Jr., 19, was captured shortly after midnight and detained for questioning about his father's death.

It was approximately 9:30 p.m. when Lithopolis police spotted Miller driving a vehicle and attempted to stop him. Miller then led officers on a chase traveling on Winchester Road and Marcy Road, when he drove off into a field in the area of State Route 752 and Winchester Road, just inside the Pickaway County line.

He abandoned the vehicle after it became stuck in a field. He then fled on foot. The Fairfield County Sheriff's Office, the Pickaway County Sheriff's Office, the State Highway Patrol and police officers from surrounding departments cordoned the area to conduct a systematic search. Authorities also used a Columbus police helicopter and K-9 units from Pickaway and Fairfield counties.

The K-9 units were able to track Randall Jr.'s scent until the dogs found him hiding in a building. He was taken into custody at 12:15 a.m. today.

This comes on the heels of Randall Jr. being charged with receiving stolen property, breaking and entering and theft on April 9 in Pickaway County.

Deputies worked for more than five hours Monday collecting evidence from the scene of the shooting, including a bloody cellular phone.

Miller was the president of the Amanda-Clearcreek Local School Board, had been a longtime volunteer firefighter/EMT for Clearcreek Township Fire Department. He was a Charity Newsie, the non-profit local organization that raises thousands of dollars in cash each year to help needy families get started in school and provide meals at Christmas time as well as providing emergency relief to families.

He is running as the Democrat candidate for Fairfield County Commissioner in the November General Election against incumbent Republican Judy Shupe.

Fairfield County Sheriff's Office Lt. Daryl Ball said the shooting occurred sometime between 4 and 4:45 p.m. Monday.

Family members discovered Miller lying found face down between the barn and the home, located at 8800 16th Road. The site is about a half mile from the 16th Road, down a gravel lane.

One of the first people to arrive at the scene was Lt. Mike Wolford.

"He was a good friend. He was always to help," Wolford said trying to hold back his emotions. "I always said that if I was going to go into a fire, I wanted him to be the person beside me. You could trust your life with him. I can't believe this has happened."

Lisa Sisco, 32, and Gerald Sisco, 41, of Oakland, news of the death came as a particularly hard blow.

"He and Connie were friends of ours," said Gerald. "You couldn't want a better person."

Lisa said they had first come into contact when Miller and she had coached soccer.

Gerald said he had been able to avoid joining the Fire Department for a while, but then he came to a Labor Day Festival and Miller was finally able to talk him into joining the department.

"He was just that type of person, he could talk you into things," Gerald said.

Lisa said he was always there to help.

"A couple of years ago I had a serious car accident. It was in November and I was bed-ridden, but he came to the hospital and out to the home," Lisa said. "When Christmas came around, he and the Fire Department made sure we had a great Christmas. He was that type of person."

Amanda-Clearcreek Schools Superintendent J.B. Dick said he couldn't believe the news when he was called about the shooting.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and children," Dick said. "Randy was a great person who was always looking out for people."

Dick and Miller would meet every Monday for about an hour to discuss what was going on in the schools.

"He was very serious about the job. He used to take a special interest in what we were doing with at-risk kids. Those on the borderline. He always wanted to know what we were doing for them to make sure they don't fail," Dick said. "In fact he was very serious about everything he did, but he was always having fun. He just refused to let things get him down."
