I tried the reply button with the message field empty and nothing happened. Now I am trying the reply button with this text in it.

Again nothing.

Is the "reply" button for something else?

for me, reply button puts me at the bottom of the post, enabling me to "reply" to that post.

Ah, so it does. That explains it. However, since most of the time I am at the bottom anyway when I decide to post its function was certainly obscured.
