Is alignment the key to alliances?

My most recent game I played it fairly neutral the whole time. The Drengin and Yor were crushing everyone, so I pumped the other races massive amounts of techs, and eventually dozens of ships, and I don't mean defenders, I mean dreadnaughts. I had as many trade routes with those races that I could.

I never got above friendly with anyone of the people I supplied. Even though the Torians and Altarians ended up allying (after I gave them the tech) they never allied with me. I couldn't have been a better friend.. is alignment the key to it all?

This is all on a medium map with all intelligent AI players.

No, your relationship is. It has to be "Close" before you can offer an Alliance. One of the big keys is trade: make their economy dependent on yours.

That said, I would imagine it's considerably harder to get to a Close relationship with a race that's aligned opposite to you.

I understand you need a close relationship to open up the option of being allied, however given my current game I don't see how I could possibly do anything more to help out the other civ and establish a close relationship. Long standing trade, no history of aggression between us. Massive gifts of tech and ships for years and years while they were being attacked.

The only thing I can think of is that my alignment is neutral while theirs is good..

Then that may be your problem. I haven't experimented with the Alliances yet, so my knowledge is entirely theoretical and based on comments around here. I could certainly see how alignment would be a factor. Perhaps choose the "good" option in the next few ethical choices you get?

In the Diplomacy screen check the three status icons displayed under their picture. One of the buttons will tell you specifically how much of their income comes from trade and how much of this trade is from you. You need to have this number reasonably high, and you will see their relationship change to close, therby allowing an alliance. Be careful though. I had an alliance with the Torians and the Arceans, then out of no where the Arceans decide to declare war on a minor race forcing me to go along with them. This race however was aligned to the Torians, so I find myself at war with them now, and I had to reestablish relations all over. Make sure to check who they are at war with before you go in on an alliance with them.

the higher your morality stats (o=evil, 100=pure good) the easier it is for the other races to aling with you. If you go to war constantly with them, they will be disinclined to become an ally"

hint sometimes it's bettter to give a tech away for free than to go for tribute. It is one of the ways to build friendships. A powerful tech can turn someone from cool to friendly in 1 turn
