I prefer to name ships for thier purpose of creation...

My first ship is usually Justice and it usually defends. Once Justice is gone then comes Vengance to avenge Justice... Then comes The Hell Storm to strike fear into the enemies heart and finally the Subjagator (I'd have more but I havn't finished a game due to minidump error or me being pwned)

I tend to just name them after other vessels in various pieces of sci-fi and history, and once I find "lucky" names, I use them quite often. For example, the HIMS Chimaera tends to die rather often, while the HIMS Victory has not been destroyed ever, and is a lovely level 10.

How do you switch the names on a Capital ship? I have tried looking for something, but I just havne't been able to find it.

yellow button in the top middle of the lower ui bar lets you rename stuff.

I play advent, and while I'm find of the default names, my flagship is always named the lux aeterna, which seems to be lucky and fits very well with the advent naming scheme. If it ever dies, I think i'll go with it like the persians did with their immortals.

I've been going with family members myself... Grandfathers, dad, and siblings as Kols, Grandmothers and mom as carriers, grandmothers'/mom's maiden names for Akkans and Dunovs. I use cities and streets I've lived in or on as wild cards.

I also have gone other routes, but I find this gives me a more personal attachment to my fleet... don't ever want to see my ships destroyed as a result.

I've always kept the default names. For some reason the TEC list appeals to me.

One thing that would be cool is if I could rename the classes of the smaller frigates and cruisers. I dont think i'd bother trying to name each frigate, but, i'd like to rename the class.

Maybe this is possible in a .config file?

I personally like Sulaco, Nostromo, and Verloc for the Kor class ships, and go with classic big gun battleshipo names like Yamato and Bismark and Dreadnaught for the dreadnaughts.
I just wish the name spaces were longer.

Vasari -

The Kortul Devastator is the Rakshasa
The Skirantra Carrier is the Ravana
The Jarrasul Evacuator is either called "City of Nod" or "City of Dis"
The Antorak Marauder is called Lucifer
The Vulkoras Devastator is Sathanas

I rename the T.E.C. "S.P.Q.R.". It stands for Senatus Populesque Romanus, and the ships have some sort of European reference

SPQR Durandal (Kol Battleship)
SPQR Curtana (Sova Carrier)
[SPQR] Charlemagne (Akkan Battlecruiser)
SPQR Joyeuse (Dunov Battlecruiser
SPQR Kaiser (Marza Dreadnought)

Advent -

Seraphim - Radiance Battleship
Archon - Revelation Battlecruiser
Deacon - Progenitor Mothership
Paladin - Halcyon Carrier
Archangel - Rapture Battlecruiser
