No Pirates mod?

If it's possible, I think a no-pirates mod would be pretty popular, especially with newbs and more casual players.

As a vet of RTS games, and a newb to Sins, I thus far have found the pirates to be the worst part of the game. I think they make the game less fun, and for me, they reduce interest in the game. I want to play to compete with other empires that play by the same rules I'm forced to follow; not some omnipotent pirate race with insta-fleet technology. I doubt I'm the only one who feels that way.

I just got done playing a game for several hours, which involved me and the pirates battling maybe a dozen times, while the AI empire didn't seem to do anything except place bounty on me, and scout my planets. It wouldn't be so bad if it weren't so nearly impossible to eliminate the pirates, but it seems like they just respawn their fleets soon after you kill them. I attacked them with 4 upgraded (1 at max level) capital ships and 50 frigates, and the pirates just keep spawning new fleets whenever I deplete their forces too much.

I would have to agree with this. It's as if the pirates have a never-ending ship supply. an occasional single pirate is one thing, but you get a whole fleet every 15 minutes.

There are several maps without pirates, and in 1.02 they added No Pirates versions of random maps. Just use the pirates to get free XP for your capitals, and mid-late game they aren't that hard to just kill off entirely.

Once you get your empire going the pirates are no big threat. There are also some useful tips in various posts here on how to deal with them. One is to build a trade port and a repair station away from your other important structures. That will keep them busy while a small handful of your ships destroy them.

What is the file that controls the time between pirate attacks? I saw it mentioned here somewhere on the website but now I can't find it. I want to double the time between pirate attacks.

gameplay.constants for pirate raid times.

Also, 1.03 is introducing a "No pirates" game option for any map, so there won't be a need to mod it :)

When you set up a game, click on game options and select the button about pirates to turn off pirate raids.
