LEGO: The Most Customizable Toy Turns 50

The best toys are the ones that require the most imagination.

http://cache.lego.com/2057/anniversary.htm

When it comes to customizable toys for kids, there really aren't that many options.  Most toys are specialty items with a single purpose in mind (think action figures, toy cars etc.) and don't really push the imagination or creativity of a child.  In the list of toys that focus on imagination, creativity and most importantly all without any reference to violence is short: Erector Sets, K'nex, LEGO.

This month marks the 50th Anniversary of the LEGO brick.  Originally in 1958, the brick design has changed little since.  In fact, bricks purchased today will fit perfectly with bricks manufactured in 1958.

LEGOs were my favorite toy growing up, and to this day I still get a LEGO set from time to time.  My most recent being the LEGO Star Destroyer, made up of over 3,000 individual pieces.

I wish my girls played with any of the contstucor kits I grew up with.  They aren't into legos, lincon logs, erctor set, or tinker-toys.  I lost so many hours using all thre sets to build playsets for my Star Wars figs.

Man... just hearing the word "Lego" brings me back. Legos were my life from as young as I could remember. That's all I ever wanted for Christmas or birthday... Legos. My most memorable set was the first ever castle, sometime in the mid 80's. It was all yellow, and had a draw bridge, and a bunch of figures. When I was about 12, me and a friend combined all of our Legos (which was tons) and built a huge city that covered his living room floor. If you remember the size of the road plates, it was about 15x15 road plates in size. Houses, stores, tennis courts, a powerplant, a car dealership... we even built a cruise ship with 3 levels that docked just outside of town. It took us most of the summer between 6th and 7th grade to build... I only wish I had pictures...

One more thing... if anyone was a REAL Lego fan during the 80's they'll remember this... LL924

I loved Lego's as a kid and still get a hankering to buy them when I pass them in the store. Kid number three might be interested in them soon...I hope.

When I was small, they were just bricks. Now there are legos that have motors, you can program, and do things that I never thought was possible back when I was 5...

It is odd looking at legos today and wanting to get $500 worth and sit down to build them!

Oh, memories... :) Remember building a lot of cars and the like as seen in TV, like some James Bond ones and playing after the old 'Impossible Mission' series. Or lots of Jeeps after seeing 'Hatari'. *lol* I had 2 very huge boxes full of Lego back then...

Was that some toy made out of stone?  Was it around before or after "the wheel"?  ;-)

It's about twice as old as Lego... pre-dates plastic and a wee bit more 'customizable' than a bunch of plastic bricks...;)  It was often used by eng designers to develop 'proof of concepts'...;)

:D Not so odd: My sixth-grade daughter has just competed in her second state-wide/nation-wide LEGO Mindstorms-based contest. Lots of real-world calculations to arrive at end points. We love LEGOs. Someday...a visit to LEGOLAND.
My fourth-grade son is Mr. LEGO. They're everywhere. Three banked track layouts, six switches, complete "Daylight Express" with two engines. I put an extra motor in each, for a total of four!(snort!) When I was a kid, I rode on the Daylight many many times. L.A. to S.F to San Diego and around!
I'm pre-LEGO. Had a four-car-garage-sized :CONGRAT: LIONEL :CONGRAT: layout, four feet off the floor, with lakes you'd swing down from underneath to be able to stand up and work throughout the whole room! Ahhh... nostalgia.
Now the dam_ things howl every nite just down the street...

[just busted myself for hyphens in this post  ;p ]

LEGOS are cool. I want a lego-constructed desk, monitor-frame, mouse, and tower/case. Lots of LEGO-shaped food out there, cereals, candy... ...legos....  :d

We had Erector Sets. Not as polished as Meccano, but awesome, nonetheless. Huge, ancient motors from the '40s or 50s... Made a cannon from it. Put a .50cal 2oz. homemade slug thru both sides of an old DeSoto easy ... erm, it took about 1/2lb fffG black powder to run it :d
