Another idea, partially suggested already

I remembered the old game Conquest Frontier Wars and in particular the use of commanders in that game. You can recruit a certain number of commanders and when they die they are lost forever.

Imagine you have a group of units grouped together and when they go into battle their fire will be unfocused, not picking their targets optimally.

In comes the commander, when you add him to a group he will take station in the strongest ship, making a military flagship of it (by title). The effect the commander has to the group is that he make the group pick more strategically correct targets, focus their fire, and so on. He will send ships to repair and all logical things a commander would do.

If the commander ship is destroyed he will move on to another suitable ship. When he is between ships he is in a much smaller shuttle, highly vulnerable to damage. If the shuttle is destroyed or the last ship in the fleet is destroyed the commander is also killed and can not be respawned ever again.

Different commanders can have different attributes and so on.

I think this could add a great touch of personality to the game. I know it's late to suggest but it's worth thinking about and perhaps added in a mod or a patch. Cheers for now.

maybe with this game, admirals would fit better (there being ships and all). its a good idea (similar to attaching a squad leader to a squad in dawn of war (improving efficiency)) and could be done. although i dont think the admiral should transfer between ships if the flag ship is destroyed. make it that if the flag ship is destroyed, it will take a certain amount of time for someone else in the fleet to realise, and take command. he is less experianced, but still helps.

so in short, there is a flagship, with an admiral (which could be an upgrade for the ship) which improves the fleet. if it dies, someone else takes command, but the bonuses are smaller, the fleet is less organised. this goes on and on untill the fleet is dead, or until the bonuses become so small, it doesnt even matter anymore.

Sounds like a horrible idea. The ships already have AI issues enough without deliberately crippling then because you don't have a commander on board. That said, "commanders" already exist in the sense that every ship should have capable crew on board -- we just don't have to micro who goes where.

You're blatantly missing the whole point of the idea, which is to add some extra fun and personality to the gameplay.

Of course there's a chain of command on each ship, but there's always someone with a higher rank who oversee the battle on a larger scale and coordinates the battle.

Secondly it's not fair to judge the current AI as we're still playing a BETA and most likely any issue with the AI is already fixed to a satisfying level.

^^Agrees.

I think that'd be awesome. Especially if you could hear em' blarin orders over comms and what not.

Yaya for my first post.

well seeing as the game is coming out in 3 weeks, i doubt that ANYTHING that isn't alreadyin won't be in now.

Indeed. That's why I also wrote it could be added in a mod or a patch. I'm not skilled in modding so I don't know how hard that would be to do.

Admiral Hallsy here! Or whatever the guys actual name was. Man Conquest: Frontier Wars was KICK ASS! I would play it still if they could port it to higher resolution and redo the models so they fit the higher resolution. That game was superawesome! I loved the admirals.

Yeah I am currently playing through it, and I can use 1280x1024. It works perfect. You can edit the ini file to allow windows resolutions and the game does fine with it. There's some tweaks you can do there such as adding 32bit textures and so on. I'm in love with that game.

Sounds kinda like what the command crusiers job is...but I like the idea.
