Just Starting...

Just Starting...

Start Panel

I just started to follow a tut in the WinC Wiki about making a start menu. It says to create an image of the start menu and then divide it up into 5 pieces. The pic there shows guide lines that divide it into 8 pieces. The explaination of what the pieces are is not very clear.
How should I divide it?
When I create images from the pieces, should the canvas size be only the size of the piece or should it be the size on the start menu?

I'm sure I'll have many more questions later.... ;p

Ta Da!!

Thanks for the help everybody. There is one last thing before I go to bed. I have a shadow hovering about 10 or 20 pixels off to the right of the satrt menu. It's not showing on this pic because it's right off the Skinstudio preview image. It shows on my desktop though.

How do I get rid of that shadow on the right of the start menu in SKS6?

I haven't found how to turn that off in SKS6, I've been turning it off in SKS5.

In SKS5 it is done by going to Start Panel in the left Pane and setting 'Hide Panel Shadows' to Enabled.

There doesn't seem to be a corresponding area in SKS6 ... you can't seem to see all the code in SKS6 the way you can in SKS5

I've noticed while I am making this skin that the colors are not right. I am using the graphics right off of my rainy, sysmetrix, etc. and when I apply it, the color is different. It's really important to get the color just right. What are my options?

Do I adjust the color of each individual graphic to make it right...or maybe finish the whole blind and the adjust the color in Windowblinds? What do you recommend?

I have also noticed that when adjusting the color in Windowblinds, it seems very limited as far as the color choices. I'm sure the skin itself has something to do with that, but I would like to be able to change the color to EXACTLY what I want. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? :NOTSURE:

Are you using Photoshop? If so , make sure Color management is turned off in Color Settings

Using GIMP. Could you explain what the color management is in photoshop? I can probably translate that info to GIMP if I knew what it does in Photoshop.

By the way, the colors look right in the preview window on SKS6, just not on my screen when I apply them.

Hmmm thats an odd one.. honestly I'm not sure whats going on there..  :NOTSURE:

Monitors have color profiles assigned to them too...look in your display properties under color management...sRGB is considered web graphics standard...like vStyler said...in your graphics program, either turn it off or match it to your monitor profile. :)

That was part of my problem...monitor and editor were using diff profiles.

Plus different progs do or dont use color management.Windows will use your monitor profile...yet Internet Explorer will not...Pic and fax viewer will.So if you see differences in images between them...one or more of your profiles is off.

Once they agree(or you turn management off in your editor)all you have to worry about is whether or not your monitor is setup correctly...mine wasnt, still isnt...doh!

Got it fixed, you were right. :D I turned off the color managment in Gimp and unchecked the box in Windowbinds that allows you to change the color of the blind. All is well! Thanks guys!!

I have a couple more questions...

On the start menu, when I mouse over the "log off" "turn off computer" and "all programs", it's blue(yuk). I can't figure out how to change that. Is there a way?

What are "coloring masks" for, and how do you use them?

Are there any tuts out there for creating sub styles? I have no clue how to make one, or if I even need to.

Thanks again for all your help. :D

Unless you have a viable reason for making a substyle.. on your first WB, I wouldn't bother with a substyle of any kind.

Sure am!!  :D  I still need to skin the Vista parts, and do a little cleaning up before it's ready.

I'm looking for someone with Vista to test it, any takers?

I thought I might want to for all the colors I need, but it looks like windowblinds will recolor pretty well. I want to match all the other colors I have on my other Talc stuff.

Thought I'd stop in again to tell you that I found where to change the background of "more programs" on the start menu in SKS6. It's under "change skin colors". If you go there, at the top of the screen is a dropown menu, choose "show skin deined system colors"....it's the "menu highlight" button. :D
