End of an era as come as AOL officially retires Netscape, the browser that brought World Wide Web to computer screens in every corner of the planet and connecting us like never before.

Leading news website Betanews has a detailed report on the sad dismissal of the web browser which had played a major in shaping the today's internet.

March 31, 2008 will mark 10 years since the Netscape development team opened up the source code to the browser that ushered in the Internet era. With its acquisition of Netscape in 1999, AOL continued that effort and helped launch the Mozilla Foundation into an organization that has taken on Microsoft and shaped the Web as we know it today.

As we look forward to Mozilla's 10th anniversary, we can also look back and appreciate the Netscape, the browser that helped kick-start the commercial web.

Well, Netscape hasn't always been "an overbloated piece of crap". I remember back in the middle of the 90s, when I had my first internet experience: with a browser called "Mosaic". And then after a short time came Netscape which offered a lot more opportunities for webmasters. Mosaic was very limited, Netscape opened the door to a new era of webdesign.

Until MS came up with a useful IE, Netscape was the one and only out there. ... mais non, it just comes to my mind: There was a browser called "Lynx", text-based, couldn't show images. And there was a small community of Netscape-haters: Who needs this needless multimedia-crap, a text-only website is enough for everyone ... ;)

no, it wasn't. netscape didn't get bloated until after several version iterations and competition with IE.

I currently use the Netscape 9.0 browser which is based on Firefox 2. It works perfectly well - fast and stable. The installer is only 6 megs which I don't consider "bloated". If Netscape 9.0 doesn't work well for you why not say specifically why instead of calling it a "piece of crap"?

I remember using Netscape on the computer lab Macs... Funny, because now, every single one of them has FireFox on them.

Well, what can I say? Nothing nice, I guess...... never liked Netscape personally.

Used it back in 98/99. I never could get on with it. I prefered Neoplanet because you could skin it. Neoplanet was my introduction to skinning, so I'm kinda fond of that.
