Scam spam sent to my WinCustomize email address

Anyone need $10million from Nigeria?

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

I get very little spam these days, because I create temporary email addresses for each web site I register with, using the excellent services of sneakemail.com. On the few occasions when I get spam, it's usually to my ISP email address, though my present ISP seems to be a lot better about security than was Comcast.

Yesterday I received one of those ridiculous messages from Nigeria, sent to the email address I created for WinCustomize and Stardock. (It amazes me that those letters actually work.)

I'm sure the fine folks at WinCustomize and Stardock are not selling email addresses, so how did the spammer come by this address? The name part of the address is a random series of letters and numbers, so I doubt that it was computer-generated. The only other way I can think is that this site was hacked. (:(

So... I'll retire the old address and create a new address for this site. I sincerely hope the new one is not misused in the future.

I'm wondering if anyone else here has received one of those emails recently.

rossburnett as a suggestion be sure to notify Stardock of your new email address so that you don't have any problems with your account. It could cause some confusion when it's time to renew subscriptions. ;)

We do not sell email addresses. Email-collecting bots may have stumbled across somewhere on the web you posted your email address (in any way, shape of form) or they may have sent it to you through the 'Email User' function on the forums. That is a function you can disable by going to your account settings on the forums. If it did come through the forums, the email address would have contained information on who sent it, in which case you should let us know so we can deal with the spammer's account.

I had a fuzzylogic@ e-mail address just for WC. It got spammed out of existence. Who knows how bots get hold of addresses sometimes. I know its unwise to put your address in a forum - they are too easy to scan for addresses.

I created a new address for WC, just a series of letters and numbers, and that has escaped spam, so far...  ;)

ive read that even these are now getting caught up as the spam bots are now spewing any and all numbers and letters out. nothing beats a good spam blocking filter.. I only accept emails from my contacts list.
