Very interesting. This just might change some folks thinking about Vista who didn't want to pay the price for Ultimate.

There are so many better reasons.

This is a nice bonus though and something I was hoping to see before Christmas

I for one ain't happy about this

sorry, but this WAS the reason I got Ultimate, now I see no need to have it.........

Very exciting! This should produce an influx of new user created dreams as non-Ultimate Vista users get involved in the scene!

Yes Zubaz I understand that, it was more me saying that since people will be able to run Deskscapes 2 on any version of Vista (I am correct in that, right) that along with all the other Vista enhancements this would probably get somemore people upgrading.

will Deskscapes 2.0 be free to OD subscribers?

The article says "Freeloaders will be glad to know the standard version DeskScapes will be available for free, and there will be an enhanced version with “additional features and premium content” for $19.95"

I need to correct an error I made in an eariler reply It looks like Vista Home Premium and Businees version will be getting this. Sorry

Nice, then we get a bigger community. I hope MS is not forgotten those who payed 125$ extra.

I still don't get why people reduce Ultimate to one extra only and feel betrayed now. Ultimate still is Business + Home Premium in one package, which is a lot more than just a few extras...

agree with that.

now if deskscape 2.0 runs without dreamscene running then we can be glad that it is 1 less programm running and should also help out nvidia users who still might be having problems. plus any games that require you to turn off dreamscene to have a decent experience will be a plus as well, since crysis is coming out...

I agree & disagree at the same time. I upgraded to ultimate for other reasons but the dreamscene was definitely an added plus! I do think that it would be a good thing for everyone to be able to have the animated wallpapers though, because more people would get involved & we'd have more to choose from.

Does Microsoft know about this?

Anyway, my dad happened to have Ultimate available, so Deskscapes just came as a plus, but now I can put dreams on all of my family's computers!

See http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=942
and
http://www.istartedsomething.com/20071113/stardock-deskscapes-2/

Specifically:

Bit of interesting background, the implementation of an animated desktop feature in Windows Vista was actually first developed by Stardock. They then demonstrated the idea to Microsoft who partnered with them to produce the Ultimate Extra, DreamScene along with a batch of its original content. Stardock then shifted its focus on DeskScapes - a free extension to DreamScene which allowed for dynamic renderings instead of just static video, as well as a community to share user-generated Dreams.

As you might the same question I asked when I first heard about this, how Microsoft will ever approve of this? It’s basically slicing a huge portion of the already miniature Ultimate Extras cake to share with everybody. But it turns out Microsoft is fully aware of this release and Stardock’s involvement in the original Dreamscene is only as a content-provider.
