Idiocy in University

Good God [Adult for swearing]

A few days ago here on campus 3 students constructed an art project outside of the art building.  It was a piece about loosing innocence or the death of childhood...something like that.  There was a tire swing set up and 7 nooses to symbolize the 7 stages of life.

Guess what?  Someone saw the nooses and cried racist.  This prompted investigation including sensitivity training and the police were involved.  This is the email sent out by our president:

Dear members of the Miami University community,

Tuesday afternoon, October 30, a Miami undergraduate, in what he reports to have been a group art project, hung several nooses and a tire swing from a tree on Patterson Avenue on the Oxford campus.  Several students observed and were alarmed by the display and called the university police.  In response to the students who confronted him, the student explained that he did not intend this to be racially motivated and apologized profusely for his actions.  The police questioned the student and immediately removed the display.

I am deeply troubled by this incident and the insensitivity that it reflects.  I am angered and dismayed that any person on this campus, particularly in light of the recent incidents in Jena, Mississippi, would even unintentionally create such a display.  Dean Susan Mosley-Howard and others have met with many of the students who witnessed the display, assuring them in every way possible that the insensitive actions of this individual is the antithesis of the values we hold dear at Miami.  I am most troubled that African American students, who have put their trust in Miami, had to confront the historic symbols of injustice and hatred in this country.

I strongly condemn this display and deplore that in this campus community any person would believe this display is in any way acceptable.  We must redouble our efforts as a community to educate every student here on the historic patterns of racism in this society.

I have directed my staff to take the following actions:

  • I have asked for a complete report of this incident, the reasons for the display, and who else had prior knowledge of this action
  • My colleagues and I will be in the Center for Black Culture and Learning tomorrow morning to talk with any students, staff, and faculty who would like to meet to discuss what has happened.  Student Affairs and other staff will be available throughout the day to talk with students.
  • I ask all persons in this community to engage in discussions about the meaning of the incident and the steps we must take to make this a community free of prejudice and welcoming to all.

Miami University has an unwavering commitment to justice and inclusion for all persons in this society, and most particularly, for all students on this campus.  I ask all of you to work with me to learn from this experience.  We must act forcefully, and we must act now.

I for one believe this has been blown entirely out of proportion.  It was a fucking art project and to automatically assume something is racist shows that there's something wrong with your thought processes.  Especially if you're in Southern Ohio-it was a stop in the underground railroad, not racist headquarters.  I know this issue has been brought up before, but this shit happening on my campus really just pisses me off.  Nooses are not inherently racist, and I wish people could fucking understand that.  As far as ignorance goes, our president and the people that edit these things couldn't even get the state right where the Jena incident occurred.  Louisiana, not Mississippi.

I'm not exactly sure what actions must be taken...censor everything that can be interpreted as offensive?  Shit like this just pisses me the fuck off.

Sometimes I wonder about people, I really do.  I guarantee you that no one would have said a word about that project if that Jena thing didn't happen.  I've never even heard of nooses being even remotely racist before that...much less tire swings.  I suppose the KKK liked to swing for a bit before lynching people, huh?

Which political party is at the head of the calls for censorship, zoologist?

It says a lot about their actual agenda!

The insensitivity to free speech?

I believe all political parties advocate some for of censorship...if not for themselves then for their pet causes.  Usually Democrats, though...*sigh*

The insensitivity to free speech?

And artistic expression.

I've heard this a lot, but...as many bad things as I can say about Republicans, I cannot recall them calling for censorship of anything. Remember, censorship is GOVERNMENT blacklisting, not corporate blacklisting.

And few Libertarians advocate for censorship.

I would have to say evolution and pretty much anything that attacks the Bible.  While it may not be full on banning of something, they do tend to push it out of the way.  Republicans, however, never really rally people against censoring anything.  Just the (as much as I hate this term) bleeding heart liberals seem to want to do that.

Debating something is not censoring it, no matter how heated it gets, zoologist.

Yes, in times past, there was a ban on the teaching of evolution. Usually what you find now is a demand that competing (?) theories be taught. That's not censorship.

True, but there was indeed a ban...so I'd classify that as censorship at one point, but that was awhile ago.
