Metaverse League Round 4

Metaverse League Round 4

Let the games begin!!!!!

Hi all and welcome to round 4 and a new season of the MV League. First i would like to congratulate the Celestial Crusaders for their victory in season 1.

A big welcome to all our new players that have joined us. We hope you like the league as much as the rest of us do, and we hope you stay with us for a long time.

Please check out this thread guys, The MVL and the AltMeta, we have been trying to get the MVL into the AltMeta for a while and now we are finally on the road to do this. We do need your support though. It will not be a quick and easy process for Kryo but he is willing to do this if there is the support to go with it. Please drop by this thread and lend your support to this effort.

As most of you know we shook things up for this round with a player draft. For those that we unaware of this i will explain. We have a new team for this season, The Eternal Evildoers/Villainy (not sure yet on the name) and to fill this new team in a fair manner and to try and create a level playing field across all teams we instigated a draft. The captain of each team stayed a member and everyone else went into the player pool.(Silverbeacher was appointed Team E captain).

Each team then had two draft picks each and the rest of the team spots filled randomly.

So here are the new look teams,

(Xei Win Toh has abstained from play until the arrival of TA)

See your captain for the new forum passwords at the Galactic Core.

As the league expands there is a need for more people to help administer and run the league. Here is a rundown of "official" positions.

Commissioner - Neilo
Vice Commissioner/Score Keeper - Firebender
Score Keeper - Silverbeacher
Rule Moderation - Mumblefratz

Also we have two current threads guys, the MVL Round 4 Draft and Discussion thread and the MVL Rulebook thread.

It is in the MVL Rulebook thread that all rules for the league will be kept. Mumblefratz will keep the OP of that thread updated with the current rules as they change across rounds. Bar for a change in the way ties are managed i do believe that the rules are very similar as to round 3.

Without further delay here is the Round 4 challenge,

A Diplomatic Victory(alliance) in a small map with 5 opponents.

Habitable planets - Abundant
Number of stars - Occasional
Number of planets - Common
Star density - Tight Clusters
Anomolies - Common
Asteroids - Rare
Tech rate - Very fast
Minors - random (enabled in DL)

Enable,
Blind Exploration
Mega Events
Super Abilities
Surrenders
Tech trading
and of course all victory conditions.

End of round - Midnight NOV 30 2007 (forum time)

Please guys leave all discussion to the Round 4 Draft and Discussion thread, as to leave this thread free for game submissions. It does get hard to sift through alot of posts to find a submitted game. Thanks.

Well, here's to a re-invigorated league and a nice challenge for round 4.
Good luck all and enjoy your games.

the highest relations you can set yourself to is "Close". I've never played a game with AI at close in the start but I think its safe to assume it has some kind of impact on the score(maybe a quick victory with the opponent at "Close" doesn't count for as much).

actually in MV games it won't let you set them above friendly. at least, it wouldn't let me.
I think I like that. It's only fitting that the AI plays with what you feel are the best settings for that race. However that doesn't mean that the settings that the human uses are ones most effectively used by the AI. But overall I think this is probably a benefit.

if you play above tough, don't they get extra points anyway?
at above Tough they get various increases across the board. Its a tad random, and usually not much depending on the ability, the biggest increase is in the Economy and Production departments. I believe, though don't know for sure, they also start with a larger treasury at higher levels. Also at higher levels the AI is VERY willing to buy and lease projects/ships to complete them faster.

Dystopic, Mumble, and others: If you were to modify a race, that is select it, and actually use up its Ability points and set the Political Party, it will get those benefits and then any other benefits on TOP OF THAT that are dependent on the Difficulty level. Again let me state that you are unable to negatively affect any race, that is give it lower abilities as that will trip the flag. There is NO reason to go into the Customrace.xml unless you are doing advanced racial modification, which is generally not needed, and definitely not if you are willing to play against the game races.

Yes, any change to the Diplomatic status of a race will affect the game difficulty. You can not set higher than Friendly in a MV game (it will reset them to Friendly if you try to make them higher than that). In a SANDBOX game you can set them to Team status if you so desired.

I've been leery of posting a thread on advanced race customization mostly out of concern that the Devs will nerf some of the things that you can do without tripping the flag. However, I do have a thread on it in the Tyranny forums for those that are members, and am always willing to answer any questions anyone may have.

i thought in addition to boosts across the board, they were given extra points to buy additional abilities...?

** Disclaimer - not a game submission **

I was curious to see the difference, if any, between starting at Neutral relations with the computer opponents and starting at Unknown, so I played another game at the same settings with the same opponents. As it turned out, there was really no difference at all. Even with a slightly weaker starting position and no military mining bases to be had, I ended up winning a similar victory in the same amount of time.

I imagine most players haven't had time to start a game yet or are retrying for a better score. If anyone is having serious trouble with getting to diplomatic victory with these settings, though, I would be willing to post my savegames to serve as an example.

It's not surprising that unknown and neutral relations makes little difference. The only difference would be that you could contact and trade techs with all other races before pressing turn 1. Really no big deal.

Even setting them to friendly would probably make very little difference over unknown unless one played specifically to take advantage of the difference.

By bringing this up I wasn't suggesting that anyone ever had or ever would use this to potential advantage, only that it possibly could be used in that way and was something that should be specified as a defined setting for folks to set consistently.

Certainly it also depends on whether you're going for speed or for high score. I personally find that high score games hardly matter which victory condition is used. Basically for high score you get it down to one opponent with a single planet, gifting influence bases to them to avoid the premature influence victory (even if that is the eventual desired outcome) and then build up your scoring categories of pop, military, income and research until you're ready to win at which time you apply the appropriate coup de grace.

The only possible advantage that this could have would be on the fast diplomatic win and even then I don't see the advantage as huge by any means.

question. are we or are we not playing with the "fastest average league submission time" team bonus this round, or no?

Here is my submission for the round:

DA 1.7x, masochistic, political victory, 3 years, 9010 points.

SCC, psionic beam, and the improvement that pumps up ship HPs in orbit does wonders for the mil rating!

Not me either. Per usual I haven't even started my game yet although I will try to get it out before the very end if only to give Motti a snowball's chance at outscoring me.
