Constant Hardlocking with Artifacts < 5 mins in game.

After starting up GC2 (Dark Avatar, haven't tried the original) I've always crashed within 5 mins. Even if I'm editing a race it's happened. It's even happened in the demo of GC2, so I'm really not sure what the problem is. I've already installed the dual core optimizer, I'm running at a high resolution, 32 bit color, and I have 165.01 nVidia drivers (also tried 163.71 and 86.63 drivers) and my video card reaches a max of 62C while running GC2.

Just recently dusted out my comp and right now I have the side off and a large box fan blowing on everything so I doubt overheating is the problem. Though I do live in Arizona and it gets pretty hot here.

And here's my debug.err:

Bleh, just realized that the debug.err I posted was from the original and not Dark Avatar. But it seems to only be made when I play the original, if I exit normally from it it gets made, but it doesn't get made, not even in the DarkAvatar folder if I start up DA and exit right away. No clue why.

Edit: Disregard this message, I didn't know that edit was under tools up on the original post above when I was making this.

Try it a few times and check the debug.err after each attempt--does it end with the same line each time?

None of'em crashed with the same line and I tried 6 different times. In fact, none even have that line anywhere in the file at all, which I found weird.

I did do some experimenting though and found out that size of the map is probably the biggest, if not the only factor in what's causing it to crash, and the largest size I pick when I go to the race screen is what causes games to crash faster. Say if I pick Gigantic, go to the pick race screen, then go in game it crashed within 1-2 minutes.

Then I picked Gigantic, went to the race screen, went back to pick the map size and chose medium, crashed within 1-2 minutes, and the next time I tried the same thing it crashed in less than 5, and if I picked medium right away, it lasted 15+ minutes before crashing.

The last 4 crashes I did were all on either rare or uncommon for most map options, to help rule out too many planets/stars causing crashes.

And the last lines from the debug.err files:

Map size medium (all options random):
Debug Message: Updating ZOC.

Gigantic (all options random):
Debug Message: EconomicWnd: Cannot find OBJID Template_Button_Back

Gigantic (all options either rare or uncommon):
Debug Message: UIBeginGameHelper: Mods are Disabled

Medium/Gigantic (all options rare/uncommon):
Debug Message: UIBeginGameHelper: Mods are Disabled

Medium (options rare/uncommon):
Debug Message: Eval

Medium/Gigantic (options rare/uncommon):
Debug Message: Eval

And with that, I'm going to go backup my current build and update to the latest version of GC2/DA.

Edit: Still crashes.

How much hard drive space do you have left on the drive where GalCiv2/DA is installed? It would be swapping memory in and out of RAM and VRAM, so if your remaining hard drive space is smaller than the allowed virtual memory size, that could explain why it crashes faster with larger galaxies.

Also, is the base version of GalCiv2 updated to the most current version? If GalCiv2: Dread Lords is not at least version 1.5, you could be missing files.

Here's a thought....

Perhaps you just have bad memory in your computer? I would run a memory tester (like the one built into the Gentoo Linux install CD or the Windows Vista install CD or any number of other Linux install CDs that include a memory tester). If that comes up clean, try removing one of the sticks of memory (if your motherboard supports it) and try the game again. Then try the other stick of memory, etc. Go through each of the sticks you have and test them each individually to see if it stops crashing. If all that checks out OK, try to find a program that will test each sector of your hard drive for errors. PC Check is a good program for doing that. As is Microscope. Incidentally, both also include memory checking capabilities. They also can test out most of the other hardware in your box to see if there are problems. If the hard drive tests clean, maybe try defragmenting it. Also try running Ad-Aware and/or Spy-bot and maybe one of those online free virus scans. If those all come up clean, try reinstalling your graphics drivers or entirely reinstalling the game (uninstall, delete any left over folders [including the My Games folder], the reinstall). Also, you might try removing hardware acceleration on your sound card and try reinstalling your sound card drivers.

Obviously, try the game again after each action to identify / correct a problem to see if it fixed the issue. If you still have problems after all of that, let us know.
