Local Multiplayer Badly Broken?

I've been trying to play multiplayer games on my LAN, it always crashes or disconnects before we make much progress in a game. I feel the ship positions/order status freezes every 15 minutes or so during a multiplayer game, possible lag or sync issues. I've had a couple games die because the host has its Graphics Adapter reset during play (no error messages, CtrlAltDel to end task). Also the client computer has disconnected randomly after about 40 minutes of game play, with no error messages, it just shows the network status screen and says the host is disconnected on the client computer.

The real ass-kicker in this all is that the "load multiplayer game" function doesn't work, so all that time is wasted. The multiplayer game does autosave, but the autosave wont turn into a hosted game. Error messages:

Failed to find file '' in either primary path or secondary path. subDir(Galaxy)
Failed to Open File: '..\..\DataSource\Galaxy\'

Pirates seem to always attack the player who is doing worse.

Also, the ability to turn off pirates is gone.

Sounds like you have an old version or a corrupt install - the two things that tip it off are the ship position freezes and that particular error message (both of which were common 2 patches ago). Did you patch on Stardock Central as of today? Pirates will attack the player who has the most bounty on them and if they are equal its a 50/50 chance.

If patching and/or reinstalling off of Stardock Central doesn't work, please report back and we'll have to dig in deeper.

OK, you were right about the need to patch, but after patching the issues haven't changed. You're right about pirates and bounty, just felt like it wasn't a per-turn random choice for the pirates, so ignore the pirates issue.

Anyways, yeah, issues still persist after updating to 0.83[b].030. Ship positions freeze momentarily on local multiplayer, and after ~70 min the client computer on disconnected.

Actually, I just noticed that I still get those same error messages when trying to load a multiplayer game, so maybe the patching didn't work? Should I do a full uninstall/reinstall?

Can't hurt. Make sure to nuke the config files as well, for what it's worth.

Yeah, I've seen something like that since late in the second beta -- probably there earlier, I just didn't notice it untill then

Late game in a lot of games, you get the entire game "hiccuping" -- momentary pauses for a fraction of a second every few seconds. Really slows the game down
