Custom ship problems.

I have a problem when saving my ships.

I make an amazing looking ship, with all the trimmings.

I save.

WTF.

Most of the stuff that I had put on vanishes, leaving me with the hull and about 40 odd bits.
the last 40 bits I put on incidentally.
The models for engines and weapons also vanish, but their effects don't.

I have normal GalCiv2, not Dread Lords.

Dread Lords is normal Galciv2. What version are you running?

Well, it's on my PC, not this crap laptop, so it isn't connected to the internet.

In short: I haven't patched.

I had the same problem under the Dark Avatar 1.7 beta. That was the version right before the most recent update. I haven't tried it under the current revision.

This was a problem in the initial release of DL (fixed in the first patch)--if you have access to a CD burner or reasonably sized USB drive, you can patch up an offline machine via SDC's archive option.

There seems to be a new issue with similar symptoms experienced by some in the latest DA, but AFAIK it's still being investigated.
