Going with influence

I restarted the large galaxy. 4 opponents, all normal except the Torian lizards are bright. Abundant habitable planets (I have a system with 4 colonies, heh).

My race is a clone of my Salari race from another context, who are very influential anarcho-social pacifists. At the moment I have a +50 social bonus, very strong in influence as well and not bad in diplomacy and economy.

I was way more balanced with the rush this time, I think I didn't buy anything on lease at all, because I just didn't get that good deals. I learned that at least 2/3 of one's colony ships should be speed 4, with a range of about 2 pc which seems to be all you need in this setting. I was building ultra-cheap colony ships with just 1 pc speed, I now have a few of those lingering towards the last planets and hoping I get very lucky. Basically the rush went fine, except... in April 2226, it still goes on - seems most of the AI started on the other edge of the map so in the far reaches there are still some free PQ 10 planets. Too bad I didn't anticipate that, I can't do much quick production...

Anyway, the United Planets legislated that there shall be Democracy for all races for 3 years (I voted for it). I can crank my approval up to 90% and still be in the money on my balance sheet. My population is over 20 bil, which is about average. I have maybe 8-9 colonies. I can do bursts of 200 bc/turn with my economy, though approval is then barely over 50%.

I think my economy is quite strong this time. I am going with an all-production strategy, currently about 40% worlds with mostly factories being built and 60% with mostly marketplaces under construction - I think this is too much though... There will be maybe 4 starports early on in the game. It's still pretty hard to get good production if I want to have a positive treasury and competitive population growth. I haven't had a possibility for research though, which makes me very nervous.

You see, technology is very important in this game. I gain allies by handing out technological gifts, not to mention tech trading. Warfare is best based on superior technology, too. I feel I'm lacking behind very dangerously, I don't even have communicators to conduct my diplomacy. I should perhaps get the tech for trade, diplomacy and better factories, in this order.

My typical planet has a factory and then an improvement or two built. I already switched many to do research focus, but it still takes over 10 turns to research my first tech, Planetary Improvements. I have almost no xeno labs. (Maybe useless as a starting tech in this scenario, to be honest.)

Everybody's colonies are pretty scattered and mixed with one another. This is a good thing, since I'm planning on an influence-heavy tactic. Already I started building my first influence starbase to guard one of my colonies and to influence 2 Altarian ones. At the moment I'm struggling to be the #1 in influence - Thalan I think has been doing well in its own corner and is getting to the top quickly here. But it won't be long before the borders are getting tight, colonizable planets are running out and people will take note of my influence. Unless I have my tech and diplomacy game up by then I'm gonna be in big trouble...

So how can I get my tech going in a hurry? And how can I play on influence besides building multiple starbases next to clusters of sweet planets?

I played on my strenghts - I just bought 1-2 planets full of xeno labs Getting teched up a was a breeze - I researched just a tech or two, then went for a trading spree and got almost a dozen more. Only the Torians are withholding what they have, agonized over that for 2 days and only now I figured it must be because it's Bright and not Normal - you can tell the difference!

Wow I still have to say that Influence is one interesting game mechanic. Looks like Stardock has done a really good job thinking through the genre and especially putting in the politica aspects of the game.

Getting out of the tech hole, I entered the ratrace to outproduce, -research, yadda yadda the other civs, Altarians have been the strongest... But with 4 out of 5 civilizations being Good (that includes me), it's been pretty quiet on the military front. We had a go at the Korx with Torians, who eventually nuked them. No AI in this game seems to have developed real military power, so even without bonuses any of them should be very easy to conquer. In the meanwhile I've been building and researching, planets are fully upgraded and I've been actually taking over planets from the Altarians etc.

I found out this tactic works best only towards the latter part of the game, when one has the entire influence tree done. Nothing better than taking over a cluster of 3-4 alien planets with 2 or 3 star bases each giving +255% Influence bonus. Logistics vs the number of star bases tends to become a bottleneck though, so in the end I guess it's back to just conquering the remaining AI, hope some of them will eventually ally, otherwise it would be one long boring ordeal...

I would think it's hard to base one's game on influence (even if the social bonus helps one to build influential planets) - it is slower and more involved than just conquering - but it could be good for grabbing the low hanging fruit every now and then. Has there been any good discussions or strategy guides on using influence?

I see that you are new here, so welcome varis2000.

I don't believe so. I never got the impression from reading the forums that influence was a popular topic.

Hi!
So how can I get my tech going in a hurry?

1) build more research buildings and have enough econ to support them.
2) trade for it.
3) invade for it.

And how can I play on influence besides building multiple starbases next to clusters of sweet planets?

In early DL games influence victory was IMO one of the easiest, as AIs didn't recognize influence starbases as a threat. Now they do, but at "normal" they'll probably not react properly. There are two general settings of the galaxy where I'd try to go with infuence:
1) a galaxy with (very) dense habitable planets, and I'd have at least one influence resource. In this case I wouldn't use influence starbases, but would try to maximize pop on my border planets, and would also use influence tiles there.
2) Quite sparse habitable planets. There I'd use inf. SBs on AI's planets, but I would build one only if I would have there enough constructors to immediately build on it at least a half of it's influence modules. No point of building it if it doesn't work properly. When planets in its influence speher would "flip", I'd probably destroy it to lower build costs of another one over another AI's planet(s). Just a caveat: be ready to defend/lose those SBs if AI goes to war with you because of your overwhelming influence.

Phew, finally completed the game with influence victory. At the mid-point I really lost my patience at the slow going of the influence game - I think I couldn't develop my planets fast enough and the logistics/starbase cost thing was a bottleneck. Even with no inherent military bonuses, I just researched some suitable tech, took on the Torians and basically nuked them. The bastards then threw themselves into the arms of the Altarians... By that time I was ready to spam hordes of constructors and build new starbases (even at 1.5k a piece) and Altarian worlds started switching sides one by one.

The AI would indeed wave some outrageous reports in front of my nose about - can you guess! - influence starbases, but in the end we always just shared some cookies and cans of Dr.Bork, laughed at those silly reports and were Friendly once again. Much to my dismay, I could not get the Thalan peeps to Ally even though I donated them a half of my tech tree. Well, AI never knew what really was best for it, anyway.

All in all, the only challenge in the game seems to have been how to do the influence thing effectively and how to optimize the economy/expansion best. I guess I really need to upgrade the game difficulty, but it was nice learning that there is a different way to play this game and that influence really can be a valid strategy.

Maybe I'll go for Evil military conquest for the next game, could play Drengin or something...
