Crash at "Play the Game" on Opening Screen

Purchased the Gold Edition, successfully installed, updated, viewed the tutorials and started both games a couple of times; ran fine. Noticed the strong suggestion to make sure I had updated drivers, so downloaded and updated video drivers for my GeForce 5500.

Now both games crash on clicking "Play the Game" at the opening screen. GC and DA both close and leave the little Windows dialog "GC has encountered an error and needs to close".

Most unusual is that currently the only thing in debug.err is:

Debug Message: Version v1.61 Dark Avatar last updated on: Wed Jun 13 14:10:36 2007
Debug Message: Checking DX Version.

Same for GC; the last line of only 3 in debug.err is "Debug Message: Checking DX Version."

Surprising in that I printed out debug.err prior to the video driver upgrade and got 4 full pages of detailed info.

Hmm, that's odd.

Please go to Start Menu->Run, type dxdiag and press enter. Then click the 'save all information' button, and once it finishes save the file down, then open it in notepad and copy/paste its entire contents here.

Problem seems to be solved! Read a few more pages of posts, deleted pref.ini files and rebooted. Games seem to be running fine now, other than in-game videos (such as when you survey your first anomaly) are choppy. Guess I will work on that now.

That much is a known problem with GeForce FX cards. Just turn off anti-aliasing (FX cards are just plain bad at it).
