Galciv2 keeps hanging aarghh!!! help please

Hi There

(edit - re Dark Avitar)

I have spent so much time trying to sort out this game so I can play. It keeps hanging. I have a laptop with Vista and an NVIDA 7400 card. I have the latest drivers from Sony and have updated Vista with latest drivers but I STILL cannot play a decent game

I have tried laptop2go drivers but got blue screens!!!

Please help me. I dream about the danmed game!! It seems so amazing if I could actually play more than 6 turns in any 24 hour period (reloading etc)

I had this hanging problem as soon as I re-installed on my new Vista machine. What I did was update the Video drivers and I have had no problems since. My XP machine I originally installed Galciv2 on never had the problem. I went to Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Device Manager->Display Adapters. Then I double-clicked on my video card and selected "Drivers" tab, then "Update Drivers". Incidentally, I was also having a problem with the background music being very staticky. That went away.

Strange that you said you already updated the drivers. :-/

It's a bug in the nVidia drivers--you need a set no older than 101.41 (dated March 14) to fix it.

Windows Update (and thus the inbuilt update option in windows itself) is notoriously unreliable for drivers. Most OEMs don't frequently update theirs either. So you'll need to pop over to laptopvideo2go.com to get them instead.

Hey Kryo

I tried a driver from Laptop2go, but it crashed my machine.... Do you know which to grab for GO 7400 on Vista?

Cheers
Charles

Any of them *should* work so long as you've got the 32bit ones rather than the 64's. So if you have a problem with one, just try another. So long as you end up with one better than 101.41 it should sort this problem in any case.

I'm using a dual-core AMD XP 64+ desktop which dual-boots Linux (but Galciv2 runs on Vista). I also have an HP high-end laptop, but I wouldn't dream of installing Galciv on it because of all the problems I know I would have (and which you are indeed having).

Like I said, I did "Update Drivers" manually through the Control Panel. I don't know if you define that as Windows Update or not, but for me that worked. If it's of any help, a couple other things I noticed: a) my audio was crackling before the VIDEO update, and now that's fixed, too. b) The memory usage in the Task Manager did not change noticeably after the update. I believe them when they say it's a memory leak, but I didn't see it in the memory table myself.

I also turned down some of my video settings from the Galciv2 Menu Menu, but don't know if I still need to. I think on a laptop you'd want to turn that way down anyway. It'll prolong your battery life.

I spoke too soon. I just locked up. Twice. And on a small map.

Please post your debug.err, then.

got it sorted. The reason the previous laptop2go driver gave me a blue screen of death was I had downloaded a driver for XP, while I have Vista.

Works now.

I don't understand why you would play GC2 on a resolution lower than the one of your destop, especially if 1280x800 is the natural resolution of your laptop display.

Some people believe in 'play it, as per defaults' rather than 'set it up right, then play'.

Really can't say without knowing the actual specs.
