Suggestion List

From a fellow VGAP player...

Hey there,

I must say first that I got involved in this Beta just recently after reading Blair Fraser's interview at IGN. After he mentioned that he was an old VGA Planets lover, I thought to myself....finally a game developer with the same gaming backround as me! I LOVE VGAP and still play it to this day!

That said, since I just downloaded Beta 2 recently, I only have a few simple suggestions at this point. Also, I haven't had time to read many other posts, so some, or all, of this may have been suggested already. If so, sorry for the dupe.

So far, SINS is an interesting concept, with a lot of potential. It's a mix of my favorite genres (4X/RTS). The following is a short list of my simple suggestions. I'd love to see some of these in Beta 3, if possible, but would ultimately just like to get some into the final version. These are in no particular order....

- As a new player to either the genre, or this game, I think that tutorials should be very straightforward. I found myself a bit lost at times, as far as knowing where to go next. If the next button to push was highlighted, to make it easier to find, then it would help with some of the frustration.
- A gameplay clock would be nice, or something that told you how long you were playing, or how long that game lasted.
- An option to change the Autosave frequency.
- An option to expose the entire map to players from the beginning (no fog of war)
- An option to toggle game speed during play, especially in single player. Sometimes you spend a while just waiting for the next thing to happen.
- A way to hide the "tool bars" at the top and bottom of the screen. Sometimes it would be nice to see more of the screen.
- Conversely, a way to expand the "quick pick" list on the left, so that you can see more of the detail without having to scroll down the list.
- Double-clicking on a ship should pick all ships of the same hull at the same location. It's frustrating having to take the time to choose each capital ship type individually.
- A way to display a list of all the ships that you have built so far, so that you know how many of each hull type that you have built so far.
- A config file, or screen, of some sort to allow the player to tweek the targetting priorities for each individual ship type.

That's it so far! Can't wait to see more of the game, and more races/ships!

1) I believe that they are kind of holding off on the tuts until closer to the final release, as many things will change.

2) This has kind of been discussed already, and we never got a real answer.

3) This should be added to the next patch/ beta 3

4) good idea

5) This shouldn't happen when all the features have been released, and should especially be less when you are playing multiplayer since people are generally better than *the current* AI.

6) You can press... i forget... to hide the GUI. DOH!

7) Good idea.

8) I think its somewehre in there, cant play it right now and check though, sorry.

9) The devs have decided that the targeting priority is perfect

multi or someone else should be able to give you # 6 and 8

Hi ViolentMind, nice to meet a fellow vgaplanets player - I loved that game and its been a major influence Good list of suggestions and the guys answered most of them but there a couple they missed. (I swear the regulars here know more about the game to me.)

- A way to display a list of all the ships that you have built so far, so that you know how many of each hull type that you have built so far.

This is available by hovering over the ship communication icon.

- An option to change the Autosave frequency.

This can be done by opening the user.setting file in C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Setting and changing the AUTOSAVE_INTERVAL value. Notepad will open it and the number is in seconds.

- Conversely, a way to expand the "quick pick" list on the left, so that you can see more of the detail without having to scroll down the list.

You might find creating controls groups will help with this (select units + ctrl + #) or changing to the optional empire window mode in options.

As for the rest of you spacerats, I'm haven't been posting much because we are knee deep in the new patch AND beta 3 AND lots of other stuff!!!

Alt-click does this ATM.

This exists -- just mouse over the counter for your ship points.

I demand the new patch. Now. Or an ETA, whichever is more convenient!

Not content with making him work 168 hours per week, you expect him to relatavistically compress time so he can work 175?
no shadow, we want him to magically compress time.

Wow! Thanks for the quick responses everyone! I only just now logged in after I left that post (busy weekend). I wasn't actually expecting much of a reply. However, seeing every point responded to is a good sign of great community, and developer support. Very encouraging! Hope that keeps up. Can't wait to see the additions in the next few Betas.

I have been playing 'Sins of a Solar Empire' for a few months now, and while I really like this game, there is one thing that I believe would improve the feel of the environment no end.

As everyone knows planets are not stationary, they move around the star in orbits, adding orbits to this game would change the game mechanic, so instead of attacking and falling back along set phase lanes, the distance between object i.e. the planets being attacked, would vary, meaning a well time attack would involve jumping in, attacking the target and jumping out, whilst the planets are at their closest, then if any repelling force follows you through the jump, it will take more time for them to complete the jump allowing a few moments to re-organize the defence waiting for their arrival.

This is only a simple example, with orbits, you'd have to consider, moons and planets passing in and out of shadows of object, so a fleet can't jump through the centre of a star, and each object will move around another e.g. moons round planets, planets round stars, star round the centre of a galaxy etc......

Such an inclusion would make the game feel more realistic, and the universe would seem to be a living breathing entity, just as it is.

And increase the performance required of the machine and add complications such as being able to go nearly anywhere, so you have to defend everywhere.
