Money Well Spent - The 18 Year Old Mouse

I still have a working LC3

When dealing with any piece of electronics, or any mechanical doodad that malfunctions, someone will usually pipe up and say "They don't make 'em like they used to!"  While that's usually a load of bull as people often remember things better than they were, sometimes you run across a device that proves that statement true.  In this case it's a 1989 Macintosh mouse connected to a still-functioning Maintosh IIci which put in 18 mighty years of service before going off to that big electronics bin in the sky.

18 years, 3 offices, and countless clicks.  I don't know of many devices that could withstand that kind of use.

Do you have any computer hardware still in use that's coming up on the two decade mark?

I am still using a Umax Vista Scan S6E SCSI flatbed scanner that I bought at Egghead in Bellevue Washington in 1996. 600x600 DPI 24-bit color and not CCD. It still produces beautiful scans of everythign from photos to three dimensional objects such as lead miniatures I like to paint.

I also have two Hitachi Super Scan 21 inch monitors I bought at the same time that work like brand new. One is an extra and is now used as a Hidef monitor the other has been in constant service since it was bought, and running at 1600x1200 at 72 Hz without lossing any sharpness or contrast.

And the oldest thing that I have is my laptop, which is where my skins come from. It's a 2001/2002 laptop and I love it coz it works so well - It has run almost anything!

It's currently using a 700Mhz processor and running Photoshop like it were on a Core 2!
Of course, I have another PC for gaming etc ...

Hey HG I love old radios. My Dad bought this in 1960 in Tokyo when he was in the Merchant Navy. It's National Panasonic Hi-Fidelity Deluxe   with shortwave, longwave and medium wave.
It still sounds great today and it has a nice rich tone.I often still listen to the cricket on it in the summer with a book and a large gin and tonic in the garden.

My grandfather had an old HMV radio that was given to he and my grandmother as a wedding present in the early 1930's...it was still going strong until his death in 1997 and my mother's sister in Coventry England still has it in working order even today.

Apparently it wasn't brand new when it was given to him, so this isn't necessarily a true indicator of its real age....shall hunt and see if I can track down a photo of it for nostalgia's sake.

The quality of workmanship in those days was superb wasn't it.

I have a 15 year old HP Deskjet 540 that still works perfectly, print quality is crappy by todays standards, but the fact it still works perfectly is what amazes me. Todays inkjets are pretty much disposable, unlike their older siblings built in the early to mid 90's which were made to last.
