How do I actually use a mod

I figured it out. having bought the gold edition I did not understand that i had to place the mods in the dark avatar sub folder. the fact that that folder did not itself have a mods folder also added to the confussion.

But it works now. Just added the a mods folder to the dark avatar folder and now things work.

I think I'm having the same trouble you were having gathfather, glad to hear you've already figured it out. Do you think you could explain a little more clearly/simply what I need to do from the moment i click the download button for any given mod in the library section of the site? I'm not even aware of if i should save the mod to disk or open it with some other application and what steps need to be taken from there. Seeing as how you've just figured it out if you happen to see this post and help would be appreciated. thanks

Dowmload them and save to disk.

Then unzip them.

Now go to your c:\program files\stardock\totalgaming\galciv2\darkavatar directory

Create a new folder called mods (its easier to copy the mods folder from the galciv2 directory.

Once you have a mods folder in both

c:\program files\stardock\totalgaming\galciv2

c:\program files\stardock\totalgaming\galciv2\darkavatar

follow the instructions in the mod. if it tells you to place a file in your mods folder then use the darkavatar mods folder if you want to use that mod with the dark avatar chapter of the game. If you want to use the mod with the first chapter dread lords then use the galciv2 mod folder. or place it in both if you want to use it for both. Make sure the mod is DA compatable if you use it for dark avatar.

Once you have the mod installed you have to start the game and choose options.

Under options you have to make sure the use mods options is checked then you pick which mod you want to use. If you are using multiple mods at once its a good idea to place them all in the default folder which is a subfolder of the mods folder. (which is why you should copy the mod folder from galciv2.

You will need to quit the game now and when you start it up again everything should be good to go.

I can't help you with specifics with the mod's instalation as each is different. be sure to follow thos instructions carefully.

Also note that some mods ask you to place files in c:\mydocuments\mygames\gc2darkavatar

which is a seperate area for gc2 files, like save games and custom race saves.
