Planet colonization

Maybe a way to negate the whole problem with pirates and planet colonization (ie. needing to make pirates prioritise colonisation ships) is to give a planet a sort of residual atmospheric shield (or preparing the atmosphere to allow the modules to enter or to prepare the site of landing) that would need to be overcome by a frigate (maybe all frigates or maybe just siege frigates) with a 30 second countdown ability, or something like that, that would restrict a player from killing all the pillagers only and then colonizing and running away to do it again.

The advantages of this is that it allows the pirates to have a much more conventional AI prioritization, meaning that any planet needs a much more conventional strategy to be taken over with a typical fleet destroying all the pirates and then colonizing, instead of a colonization ship "hit and run" strategy where the pillagers are taken out along the way, allowing an empire to grow much faster then should be able.

The pirate AI could then focus on ships on a most destructive basis, only to be distracted by ships trying to prepare the landing site.

I know that this may not be the perfect answer, but it allows the AI a much better chance at defending it's planets.

First of all, needing siege ships to expand is a really bad idea. I don't want to have to research and get a siege frigate just to expand, that would slow the game down even more. As to the problem of colony rushing, I don't really see the point. If you take an asteroid without clearing the non siege pirates, all you have is a 20 pop asteroid. You can't build mines on the asteroids or even build defenses, the pirates target them before the constructors even get there.

I think the best solution to the colony ship problem is to do a check before the ship uses colonise to check if there's pirates in system. If so, abort the colonisation. This even sort of works in a realism sense, nobody would want to move onto a planet with pirates orbiting overhead, I sure wouldn't anyway .

Instead, make the colony ship only able to colonize one or maybe two planets before vanishing. This would also reduce some of the weirdness involved in waiting in orbit of a planet for the antimatter to recharge so it can colonize the planet.

I've often had a duel between my colony ship and that of a rival/allied empire where it was all about who could get to 100 antimatter first.

Colony Ship = Insta Colonize but Disappears when doing so

Perhaps we can make colony ships 'recharge colonists' by returning to an owned planet to pick up more people.

Actually the colonize and disappear function would work quite well IMHO

why, its sort of like GalCiv - the colony ship is the seed for new colony, it sorta instantly plants the flag but in order for a new colony to ship to appear at the "forward location" the new colony needs to build and populate one...

And this does not completely prevent a colony race...the home planet can keep generating them...

anyways, I am just starting the tutorials so I haven't really experience the issue yet.

yea thats what i said i said have the colony ship go back to your nearest populated planet and pik up more colanists insted of anti matter its almost like antimater is colanating the planet not people cos you have infinate people and limited antimater oo that makes sens lol

Well, unless antimatter powers the transporters, and the people are beamed from their homeworld through some sort of system involving quantum mechanics (and why not, everything else in this game is completely beyond our current understanding of physics ;) )

Now as to whether they're beamed to the ship and then sent to the planet's surface, or if the transporter equipment is sent to the planet's surface with an onboard supply of antimatter to then move colonists over directly, that's a different story.

Or why we need trade ships if such a technology really exists.

Sorry to dig up a year old thread just for this nonsesne but this is a legitimate issue IMO ;)
