CTD on startup if i lower visual settings

Title says it all, the game will crash with lower settings (ex no ship bump mappings, no planet textures, etc). On higher settings it doesn't crash, it's just that my machine can't run it smoothly on high settings. Any idea whats causing this?
Also on dreadlords it runs fine with low settings, the problem is on DA.

If you're running the initial release of 1.6, there was a crash issue with having point sprites off or background stars all the way down. The 1.61 release on SDC fixes this.
