Overall, Apple good but weakened by AT&T

The iPhone has arrived. So what's the verdict on the most anticipated electronic gadget of the year? I'll sum it up this way: Apple good. AT&T bad. That seems to be the consensus whether it be AT&T's slow Edge network or the awful typical customer service at AT&T stores versus Apple stores. Apple demonstrates once again that it really has its act together when it comes to producing and launching a new product. Being partnered with AT&T really just highlights that further since it gives a contrast.

Here are some of the more interesting reviews we've seen:

The strengths of the iPhone are mostly about its construction, fantastic UI, ease of use, good speaker, and WiFi support.  The downside revolves very largely on two points which some (myself included) consider show-stoppers.  First, unless you're using it in a WiFi area, forget surfing the net with it. The Edge network is dial-up quality. So web browsing is not going to be something you would want to do. Secondly, the battery cannot be removed and is expected to only last about 2 years. To replace the battery, users have to send their phone to Apple for battery replacement. I don't know about you but I either need my phone or I don't. Having it gone for a week or two is not something I can do and at $600, one assumes that the user needs their cell phone.

My personal take is to wait for a second-generation iPhone. One with a removable battery and 3G support.  I wouldn't be surprised to see that come out next year.  It's a bummer, however, that the iPhone has an exclusive with AT&T for 5 years.

the screen held up impressively on that scratch test pc world did...

That's hardly what I'd call a test....not compared to what many teenagers would put a mobile phone through. To get something comparable, you'd have to put one in a cement mixer, dowse it in a variety of liquids and strap it to a lightweight wrestler in a heavyweight match....and that's just to start.

Well, I'm going to wait for the Sony Ericsson W960i with touchscreen,8GB storage capacity, 3G networking,wlan...works over GSM 900, 1800, 1900 & UMTS 2100 and a 3.2 megapixel camera....at about a third of the price and with a battery that i wont have to replace after 2 years.

All the features that iPhone is being hyped about is present in a simple little phone called Motorola E6 ROKR. it has a touch screen, huge memory capacity, ts not locked to any carrier, can change battery. 2 mp camera, all format media playback, even files like ogg and matroshka are supported.

and costs a trifle compared to the iPhone. I have seen the Iphone. Sorry to say apple, all hype, no material.

Wish they would have gotten something truly revolutionary.

Something like being gps phones, no matter where you are, even in the amazon jungle you can talk.

well. Let's wish the upgrade a better luck!

LOL like I'm going to make my decision on a Iphone from some two paragraphs at wincustomize. LOL did you get the iphone or look at some web pages or go to a Apple store look at it then come back and write this? Some like the Iphone some dont. And with all the features some of these phones have MOST people NEVER use and thats the sad part.
