THQ has unveiled one of their promised additions to the Supreme Commander universe with an all new standalone-title, Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance. The new title will continue the story of the Infinite War started by Supreme Commander, or SupCom, but will add to it a new single-player campaign, a new faction, and of course, new multiplayer features.

Series creator and developer Gas Powered Games will remain on the job, adding a total of 100 new units to the universe as well as a revising the impact of navies, orbital weapons and counter-intelligence technologies on gameplay.

"Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance is not only the continuation of the epic story that is unfolding inside the game's universe, it is the continuation of our goal to move the bar for RTS gaming even higher than ever," says Chris Taylor, CEO of Gas Powered Games, who continues at the helm of the series' development.

"Forged Alliance offers over 100 new units, more maps and an entirely new faction... we are stuffing this game with all kinds of new features!"

Hopefully the sequel will add DirectX 10 support like the original was supposed to have.

Honestly, I'm still feeling sour over Supreme Commander's first release. No offense to the GPG guys because they tried to do something really epic with SC, but the races were too generic with one another (i.e., the units), the interface was too big, the resource model was too simple with being able to turn energy into mass, and the AI was horrid (probably because of all the units). As a huge Total Annihilation fan, it was just "meh" in all sorts of ways.  I doubt Forged Alliance will have DX10 support either since it sounds like a standalone expansion pack and they said those wouldn't support DX10.

I dunno. I'd love to be proved wrong, but it seems like the entire game would have to be rebalanced from top to bottom plus a lot in-between.

Don't forget the pitiful performance on release. I don't have a bad system (Athlon 64 3700+, 1GB PC3200 RAM, x800 XT video card, WinXP SP2) and I still had to turn all graphical effects to a minimum to get anything approaching acceptable frame rates. When compared against the performance of a game like X3 or C&C3 on my system, SupCom comes up ridiculously short.
