It's interesting what you find in court documents sometimes.  In response to recent legal concerns with the US Department of Justice regarding Vista's bundled desktop search tool.  Microsoft has agreed to add the ability for users and OEMs to modify the default search in Vista.  The most interesting tidbit is that the change will come in Service Pack 1, which will go into beta testing later this year, and be released mid 2008.

This is the first hint at Service Pack 1 since Vista's release, as Microsoft has been very tight-lipped about the details.  With so many people holding off on upgrading to Vista until SP1 arrives, it's a bit of a surprise Microsoft hasn't been more forthcoming with information.

They're probably betting that people can't wait that long.

I'm not planning on upgrading any of my systems now. I've decided the only upgrade route I'll take is via new purchases. I've got 2 servers & 12 XP pro systems at the office as well as the 3 systems at home so it'll be awhile.

that is 1 long wait for a SP....but hopefully they will give us ultimate users MORE STUFF!! and some of the process like the wininit.exe and the winlogon.exe to where you can't close them nor end their process.

I couldnt care less for a service pack, i want working drivers from Creative and Nvidia that will support 5.1 sound and SLI set ups on non-DX10 cards. Those guys had several years while Longhorn, as it was called, to develop their own beta drivers. Yes the HAL was removed in Vista, but I doubt it was a 12th hour thing. Same goes for other major hardware companies such as Lexmark and Brother - who some of their printers are not even compatible yet.

I wish people would stop bashing Vista and look at the fact that it will be here to stay and people will use it and in all honesty it is a very good OS, I myself went out and bought the professional version, I did however keep XP lucky thing too due to the driver woes. Apart from the fact my 6 12month old system needs a bit of an upgrade for a smoother run and driver woes, I cant fault it.

could you imagine what would have happened if all the software developers got off their butts and got with microsoft and EVERYTHING worked in harmony. like creative and nvidia having real working drivers and dx 10 support really being there and people who have ultimate actually got what they paid for.....there sure would be alot of happy people out there and now the best hope for mankind is waiting till 2008 for sp1 that just might help solve a few problems....i think microsoft needs an a guy who goes door to door and lets us kick the crap out of him for our frustration.....just my thought on this big load of crap.....

There have always been beta service packs since Win 9x.

everything fixed and stable
never happens in the real world.  The goal is to get it good enough for the masses.

Freaking Google!!! Anything to try and make a buck these days I guess. Funny how I didn't see Google complain and file lawsuites because it can't integrate with Linux's "native" search abilities inside the OS. When will these 3rd party vendors stop with this BS. And people wonder why there's so many holes in an OS.... it's because the OS has to be made open to a certain extent for these lame ass 3rd party apps to work. I don't need Google search invading my personal search capabilities on the OS level for frack sake!
