Updating the game

Hello,

I'm new to the forum and I have a few questions about Galactic Civilizations 2 - Dread Lords.

I purchased the standard game in a retail box (not the Gold or Collectors edition) from Target.

Anyway, the game crashed (screen froze, pointer moves but cannot click anything) when I tried to upgrade a starbase with a constructor.

I have updated my video and sound card drivers.

I clicked Update Game in the GalCiv2 launcher to get the latest patch/fix/whatever.

Can I just download the v1.4 retail update or do I need to download the Stardock Central software or do I need both?

Is v1.4 the most recent update?

Thanks in advance to your respone!

The best way to get ur GalCiv2 Dread Lords updated is via stardock central.

The latest patch for dread lords is version 1.5

Version 1.6 is already out but you'll need Dark Avatar for that.

I suggest you play around with Dread Lords first and once to master the gameplay, go get Dark Avatar. If you feel Dread Lords is great, you don't know what you're missing out in Dark Avatar

The updates since 1.4x for plain GC2 have been pretty minor and mostly related to the expansion pack, so I'd give 1.4 a go first, and only worry about 1.5 if you're still having problems after that.

Hello,

I downloaded stardock and 1.4
I still had problems so I went with 1.5

Things were running ok for a while but then the game started randomly crashing after a few turns.

I read some related threads in the forum and determined that my problem is with Windows Vista.

Since the laptop I bought came with Vista already pre-installed my only option was to either
1) erase Vista and install XP or 2) set up a dual boot with Vista and XP.

After scouring the net for info & drivers for the past few days I decided to go with option 2.

Now, after several hours of installing and testing I finally have GalCiv2 running perfectly.

Here is my system specs (I forgot to mention this before)

HP dv6338se
1.8 Ghz AMD Turion 64 X2
1 Gb RAM
Nvidia Geforce Go 6150 64Mb
160 GB HD

Good example for those new to both Vista and CG2.

kryo, you should retitle this thread something like "Advice for 'new computer' newbies".

If that was the case you may have simply not been getting new enough drivers (the release drivers for nVida on Vista are buggy to say the least, with some significant issues causing the game to crash in all drivers prior to early March). You can find modded versions of the standard drivers at laptopvideo2go.com though, which will install on laptop chipsets.
