Exp from battle differ from ship to ship

I have found that different units/ship require different ammounts of exp to level.
1) What does levelling up actually do? (up the stats, i know, but which and how much)
2) Is there a table showing which units require how much to level up?
3) I haven't really noticed this untill my soupped up 'surveyor ship' which collected nearly 8 attack points went on a killing spree. Damn, is it just me or it's a bit weird watching a 'surveryor' thrash a 'batle cruiser'... :notsure: It apparently required more exp to level up.. Is it a bug?
