Opus Dei – Oh what fun!

Violent Religion?

Opus Dei – Oh what fun!

I do not know anything about Opus Dei only what I have seen on this video, and therefore, how true this video is I do not know. If it is true or close to the truth then it is not a religion I would choose that is for sure. What a violent way to God.

Surely God does not expect you to suffer your way to him?

Jesus bled for you - you bleed for him?

A substantial portion of that video was Hollywood cinematics. The nuns were from a movie and the guy before that was from the Davinci Code. I'm not saying this practice doesn't happen but this example was a bit sensationalized.

That being said, I just don't see how god would want me to torture the vessel that he has chosen for me.

JJ, thank you for your comments, yes I remember seeing him in the movie DaVinci Code. How much truth is in the sensationalising? (I am going to do a bit of research on the net)

As you say torturing the vessel he has chosen for you would seem contrary to Gods choice, it is a terrible practice.

The guys that get themselves nailed to the cross to re -enact the crucifixion, I think that is not a good thing to do either. God sent his son to die on the cross for man
he did not ask man to crucify himself each year. I think some things just have a way of being interpreted as self ideas, and these self ideas mislead a whole lot of others.

Seems more than a tad strange that anyone would think GOD  wants them to torture themselves in HIS name.

This is called asceticism and is considered a heresy in the Historic Christian Church. It's where a person practices extreme self denial for religious reasons. It also can be translated by a person who abstains from the normal pleasures of life or denies himself material satisfaction.

This is as old as the hills going back to the early Christian days, think monks, hermits, nuns etc.....and is very common especially in the CC. You may have heard of monks whipping themselves in ancient days...not sure but I think they still do. Or how they take vows of silence and pleasure for their entire lives. This is not pleasing to God but they believe it is. Instead of accepting the suffering of the one who died for them, they are being led to believe they have to suffer as well to earn their way into God's good graces.

Anyhow it was discouraged in the early church and was considered heresy. I think the Apostle Paul addressed this in one of his letters.

Indeed, It seems to be a corruption of the message Jesus brought to us.
