DA Constant Random In-Game Crashs

ive looked around the forum for help but none of the selections i have found have helped the problem i am having with the game. i have already, updated my video card drivers, checked my vitural memory/page file, lowered the games video settings, my resolution is higher then the minamum recomended. my computer is less then a week old, with intel duo core 1.86 GHz, 2 GB ram, and my video card is a Nvidia geforce 8600 GT. any help would be awesome, ive played the orginal for a couple of months and i really like it, and hope to keep playing it.

If you have checked other threads then you must be aware the the first thing you should do is post your debug.err info - preferably right after the crash.

Other than that, if your computer is brand new, and if it has Vista as the OS, are you sure you have the latest drivers? Just checking through Windows Update will not do it.
Here is the link for nVidia's latest Vista (32-bit) driver:
WWW Link

If that is not the problem, sometimes an overheating video card or cpu will cause random crashing, or running the game at other-than-desktop resolution with an incorrect monitor driver installed.

Please go to C:\Program Files\Stardock\Totalgaming\GalCiv2 (or wherever you installed the game at), open the debug.err file you find there in notepad, and copy/paste the contents into a post here. If this is a DA report, you'll find the debug in C:\Program Files\Stardock\Totalgaming\GalCiv2\DarkAvatar instead. This will give us some technical information that can help troubleshoot your problem.

Be sure to copy the debug immediately after the error occurs; if you start the game again, the debug will be erased and recreated for the new session.

Note: If running on Vista with DA 1.6b2 or later, the debug.err is now located in My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar.

Please install 'SmartException' from the free stuff section in Stardock Central. Make sure that SE is running and start your game as normal. If the game crashes it will generate an exception report that can be emailed to [email protected].

Include with the email a description of what you were doing at the time, how to reproduce the crash if possible, a zipped save if applicable when you send an SE log to gc2bugs, and the appropriate debug.err file for DL or DA. The devs cannot help if you do not provide these details!

If SE does not automatically pop up and prompt you to send the report when the game crashes, you can find it at C:\Program Files\Stardock\SmartException (it will be the newest file with a .CRA extension).

i did as asked, will this create a solution for my problem? or is this merely a way to have you guys one day fix it?
You may or may not get a response, but hopefully your report will give the devs the information to at least find and fix it in the next patch, if it's something in the game at fault.

There's a minor new 1.61 patch on SDC right now that you might try too, just to be sure.

so basically ive spent 60 or so odd bucks on this game and the expansion and im supposed to just hope i get a response? i find that in kind of poor taste. does anyone know who i can contact about this problem over the phone? perhaps they can work me through something on my computer or give me my money back.

The developers are not support, but if there is something they can do about it, they'll do their best to fix it. I'd like to be able to make you a guarantee, but with a randomly occuring issue, they'll have to reproduce it, find the cause, and fix it, and unfortunately that's not always easy or possible for such a problem (particularly the reproducing it). The information you sent them will hopefully enable them to do it if it can be done.

does anyone know who i can contact about this problem over the phone?

You can contact support at 734-927-0677, Option 2, if you'd like, or at [email protected], though if the issue is indeed in the game itself (there's nothing apparent in your debug, and you say it occurs randomly), there's little that can be done short of turning it over to the developers.
