Customizing ships?

I can design a new ship--engines, weapons, defenses and modules...but I cannot add any extras. The "place" button will not 'light-up' when I choose an extra. Any suggestions?

Maybe because you do not use the Place button to add the jewelry pieces onto the hull.

You simply move the piece to a hard point on the hull and left-click.

That's it. I was trying to use the "place" button this whole time. Thanks man...it's working now.
