DA option to use old graphics engine?

+ NEW: Option to use old graphics engine for users of video cards that don't support the DirectX features we're using
What does this mean? I can play DA with DL engine? And how?
And could somebody explain what "Use Enchanted Ship Rendering" and "Allow Mixed Vertex Processing" do? Do checking these improve performance or not?

Those new options do exactly that. It is not related to the gameplay changes of DL->DA, but rather the new graphics engine in 1.6 that some low-end cards have problems with. You should only need to turn them off if you're having problems, since most people will get better performance with them enabled.

One of the computers I use for GalCiv2 is an older laptop, and while it runs GalCiv2 reasonably well (battles are choppy), DA won't run at all. I was hoping "+ NEW: Option to use old graphics engine for users of video cards that don't support the DirectX features we're using" meant DA would be using the GalCiv2 graphics. Am I wrong?

Am I just screwed in terms of getting DA to run on my laptop?

It means that DA will use the same rendering methods as were used in the initial release od DA, rather than the new 1.6 method which is faster on most sytems. If you're having issues in any case, you should start a thread with your exact problem and debug.err so we can take a look at it.
