I have NOT downloaded the update for DA but it crashes when I

try to engage cheats!!(im not cheating btw im trying to play a hotseat multiplayer)

the target feild in the shortcut reads as follows

"C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\DarkAvatar\GC2DarkAvatar.exe" cheat

just like the wiki cheats page says....in the start in line it has

C:\PROGRA~1\Stardock\TOTALG~1\GalCiv2\darkavatar

Please help! Ive been trying to do this for hours!

I can get you something from the error message that comes up when the program crashes if you need it!

In your C:\ root do you have a file called 'Program' or 'Program1'? (no file extension, and it will probably be 0 bytes in size)
If so, delete them and try the game again.

And it is always a good idea to post the entire contents of the Debug.err file.

Just click on the C: in Windows Explorer.
In the right pane you will see the folders at the top, and further down individual files.

Down near the bottom you may see a file called Program. Just that, and it will have a size of 0KB. If you see that, delete it, and the same for a file called Program1.

You may need to set your options to see system and hidden files, and to show file extensions. I am not sure if those files are hidden or not. To do that, click 'Tools' in the menu bar, then 'Folder Options' from the dropdown. Go to the 'View' tab, then click the button for 'Show Hidden Files and Folders', and uncheck 'Hide extensions for known file types'. Then click OK and recheck for those files if you did not see them before.

The reason I mention it is because I recently had a problem starting a different game, and that was the fix. A couple programs put those files there during their install process, and when Windows is using the old 8.3 filename conversions (as you mentioned in your OP when quoting the paths - C:\PROGRA~1\Stardock\TOTALG~1\GalCiv2\darkavatar) things can get confused.

Ummm im not seeing anything that is program or program 1 and i went and checked to show hidden files and unchecked the hide extensions buttton.....there is program files? should i look in there?

No. It would be those specific files in that location if that had been the problem.
You could also try changing the 'Start In' path to read:
"C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\DarkAvatar"

still no....i goes and starts the program and goes through the stardock swirl in and will play the vid explaining dark avatar and then when it tries to go to the main menu is when the game crashes....
