Can't update game

I've been playing Gal civ about a couple of months now but it randomly (and frequently ) crashes. I have to start again and just go to last autosave. When I try update the game at Stardock..that too crashes! It gives the ' tell microsoft about problem...blah blag...etc (!).
Is there a way I can update the game?? Incidentally my internet connection here at home is pretty poor (no broadband)....
