Dumping old stuff

old windowblind stuff

windowblinds, some of this stuff is really old, I don't have the talent to make these but those of you that do, please give us some new stuff, over 300 is great but some are very old and not very good anymore. The new stuff is great, I personally want to thank all of you who make these, but couldn't we dump the really old stuff? Thnx, Just my opinion. Hoping to get some new stuff for my money.....

Why dump the old stuff? It's sometimes interesting to see the old school stuff.
Instead of dumping it, why not just ignore it?

There are 4,075 WB skins here right now.

Hoping to get some new stuff for my money.....

You are listed as a current customer, which gives you, for the Stardock apps you have purchased, free unlimited downloads without having to subscribe to WC.

I believe skins are on wb for a reason, they are classics. You cant go past Cyclops or airframe, they are just gorgeous skins...and great to disect and learn from, then again there is a new saying that im learning as a skinner, and that is you cant please everyone. there are skins i dont like either, everyone has their own tastes. you can always download ones you like to replace ones you dont....

an idea of mine (I'm sure it's quite original) would be that the really old skins could possibly be placed into a section of their own, I made the mistake of downloading & installing a wb that was quite a few years old and in hindsight I should have guessed that it wouldn't have worked in a winxp environment, after applying the skin it caused by system quite a bit of grief & errors and it took me a while to get my system functional again so that I could apply a current skin. Maybe somehow labeling the skins that were meant for a win3x/9x environment so that winxp user's wouldn't download & use them.

I believe (as policy) it's really up to the original poster although I'm sure Stardcok could take down whatever they wish.

I've taken several of my older skins down including a couple of Windowblinds. For me it was a matter of quality. My first few attempts just weren't up to par.

Having said that, a LOT of the older stuff just doesn't fit that category. When they were posted they were "State of the Art"

For those who like to track downloads, pulling off a Windowblind can really effect their total.

one thing they could do is seperate the skins and themes by year, or by windowblinds version. probably a bad idea but what the hey, i am gonna say it anyway

Not bad idea at all, Nimbin. The galleries could definately use better sorting/search options.

As for older skins, I think they're better off being updated and added as new entries, keeping the older ones for posterity and history.

You said it for me. Oldies but goodies. Some of them are irreplaceable. Unique. Still work on WB 5.5 I like going back to when I first found this community and running some themes just to remember what was really eye-catching and innovative way back when. Resort, rearrange, etc. No dumping.

Great idea nimbin.. I'd like to see that too.

mschleisner seems there's about 3700 you haven't tried yet by your numbers. Stardock more than likely won't be taking down old skins anytime soon as content is the catalyst around which the site revolves. New WB's are submitted almost daily..stay on page 1 and you'll never have to stress on older work.

I was talking about windowblinds only, there are many as most have said that don't work on windows xp and will never work on vista. Yes I do not use the ones I think are old and outdated, but just because you have boxes of cookies, they do get stale. I have been here years and I loved everything that has come out. I would like to see some of the old gone, as I said, this is no reflection on the person who created the work. It's just like old computers, eventually it just doesn't get it anymore. Cursor xp is great and has very simple and old cursors, I don't use them either. As I said, it is just (my) opinion, not something I want a war about. I just think there is so much talent out there and more that can come from asking those who know how to create more and give us new and more exciting stuff. Geez folks, don't shoot the messenger.

This may be true but there are still people out there using older Windows OSes, some still using 95. The numbers are maybe not that large for them but the older skins are needed by these users.

I've currently used stuff as far back as 2001 - I go back once in a while and retry them - example: Frogboy by Pixstudio - for a while, I would see the magic pink on some versions of WB, but using 5.50.023 all is good.

And that is by choice, as the name implies CursorXP is for XP only, WindowBlinds is not.

Yes there are many talented people here but to make a complete with all the bells and whistles WB can take 40 to 80 hours.

On behalf of WB skinners everywhere...I'm insulted...at the tone and intent of this post.

I could rant on but why bother...this person wouldnt understand.

Yeah, mine took many hours, even with very simple handcrafted graphics.

I remember old days of skinning when features consisted of titlebar and frame, borders, buttons, radio and check buttons. Those was so easy. Ah old days...

I can think of 4 old ones off the top of my head that i use ,liquid,x-men 1.03,spider,myst i'm sure there's more that i'd like but have'nt got round to installing them as i've downloaded all wb's since the day i got objectdesktop, even ip has some choice old ones

I love the old WB's.  I don't have many from the past year on my machine so I'd hate to see them be deleted.  Besides, if the skinner deletes skins, they lose that download count.

I have several wb that are old. But they still work well on XP. One of my favorite skinners from the past is starone. She was definately a skinner a head of her time. She has a unique style and wonderful talent that cannot be denied. As well as other from the past.

There are a # of golden oldies that I use as well....on XP...And remember that to new people they are not *old...had a WB made in 2001 on my machine, friend saw it & loved it & couldn't believe how it *old it was

It is a pleasure to be able to stroll through those old skins....any kind & see the original ideas & styles that were being used. I use many old skins from a variety of programs....

I could rant on but why bother...this person wouldn't understand.

agreed

Some of the old stuff is great, even by today's standards. I've been thinking about updating one or two favourites for personal use.

Well you have all convinced me that my opinion was just a little shallow. I know it takes a long time to create these wonderful skins. If you think I don't get it, you are wrong, I do. I said I don't have the gift to create these works of art. I again state for the record, it was just a thought and not intended to "crab" anyone out. This is the only site on the "web" that gives me all I need, cursors, wallpapers, windowblinds, icon packager, and stuff no one would think of for the fun of their computer. Friends always ask when they see this stuff where I get it and many have bought the programs here because of the price and quality of all the work. I just hope those who are talented keep up the good work. Thanks Again to those who have done such a great job here.

(Mrs)mschleisner,
A very viable proposition, and one that has raised some good ideas on sorting the galleries. I sometimes wish for the themes I had, pre-crash, from 2001 that are now lost in cyberspace somewhere. To me, it's all good, one way or another.

Perhaps a point worthy of note....for those of us/you who may not actually be using the Windows shell [Explorer.exe] even the very earliest WB skins still work just fine, eg. most of mine were done when Win98 was still new....but they're still installed/working in XP Pro [the OS most are still using]...

I agree, And sorting the galleries would be great. I understand that the old stuff is great, in it's time, yet again, I do not wish to offend, I love everything at this site, just been a member too long and I am here so often that it starts to look old to me sometimes and I think if it was a little more split up it might create more interest in certain spots and you would know where the areas that people would be leaning. Keeping up with what is new is very compelling nowdays. The beauty in what is done is something I can't explain. I am just starting to do my downloads and learning what is accepted and what isn't. Everyone has a camera and you have a great site here.
