I'm Really, Really Gonna Do It This Time

I'm Really, Really Gonna Do It This Time

no if, buts, maybes or feeble excuses this time

I tried & failed several times before, but this time I've gone 3 days without a smoke and I'm coping well with it.....very, very well, in fact. Yep, I get cravings from time to time, but my resolve is not to give in to them and I haven't...haven't even used the nicotine patches or the gum, yet my willpower is holding strong.

Best part about it is that mrs starkers is giving up with me, meaning that we can give each other moral support & encouragement along the way. Even more of a deterrent/incentive, mrs starkers senior (mum) has told me that I'll go over her knee if she catches me lighting up again.

Yep, we're gonna do it this time....no more filthy smokes.

I have some ideas to keep you guys occupied...

I had a real strong premonition somebody would come up with that one....trouble with that is avoiding the 'obligatory smoke afterwards'. Shoot, I even allowed my mile high club membership lapse when the airlines announced a total smoking ban on all commercial aircraft, that smoke (friction) detectors had been installed in the toilets.

As a smoker myself, I take my hat off to you, and I've also heard that niccotine is only in your system for 24 hours, after that the rest is mental cravings (not sure if that is true or not)

Yeah, I read that the nicotine in a smoker's system usually dissipates within 24 to 48 hours, that it's mostly in the mind after that.....so no need to take your hat off. If weak willed, no willpower me can quit, then you can do it too.

One piece of advice I can give to potential quitters, having been there before, is not to try quitting the smokes during periods of high stress, anxiety and/or depression. The best time to quit is when everything in your life is as good as it possibly can be, when you're most at peace with yourself and the world.

I tried quitting buying gas one time.. never... got.. any... where?

I tried quitting gas once...just gave me a massive belly ache....quit trying after that.

Very proud of both of you.....!

Thanks, Jack....going into our fifth day and we're doing very well indeed, just feeling the positives and no overwhelming cravings to weaken our resolve.

As a smoker here it is great to see your positive attitude I also saw on another thread that you are on a diet, if true then that is very smart : I have cut back at least when I'm on the phone....one of the worst times for me.....by having a bottle of water in hand.

I am impressed with both of you & Thank you for sharing this here.....sending positive thoughts your way

Keep it up - it's really cool on New Years Day, not having to make that darn resolution again.

Why thank you, My Secret, your positive thoughts are most welcome. As for the sharing part, well I thought of it as being a positive thing, cos if quitting becomes contagious through our efforts here, then it's a good thing for those who are inspired and can quit also.

Keep it up - it's really cool on New Years Day, not having to make that darn resolution again.

.....and again, and again, and again!! By the time I was 12 I had already failed four times to keep the quit smoking resolution. So by the time I was 13 my New Year's Resolution was to quit drinking & stay sober....couldn't keep it, either. By the time I was 49 and had quit drinking anyway, I resolved to quit chasing wild women. That was/is the only New Year's Resolution I ever kept....only reason I made it was cos I knew that I was incapable of catching one anyway.

Picked the wrong day to give up glue sniffing..

Now now, Jafo, how you dare come in here with all that negativity!! The wonderful folk here are very supportive and will help you kick the habit. All you have to do is truly believe, say three 'hail Stardocks' and allow these good people to lay the power of their healing hands upon you. After that, glue will be something you'll only use on April 1st, for party tricks/practical jokes.

Great to hear you're both sticking at it.

Now be prepared for those extra little challenges; assuming the ashtrays have gone, where will you both put those pesky nail clippings?

Good luck to you, I finally gave up this year (well have made 13 weeks so far, which is a lot longer than I normally do) but then I have added incentive this time as my youngest child has been diagnosed with asthma.

Once again all the luck in the world to you both.

All the smoking paraphenalia has been thrown out...simply, there are no triggers here to challenge our resolve not to ever light up again.

I must admit, though, yesterday was probably the hardest day since quitting....there were times when I got fleeting cravings (at times when I would have lit up before), but I kept myself otherwise occupied and they passed quietly with minimal discomfort.

Amazingly, I've still not resorted to the gum or patches to help get me through, nor am I substituting the smokes with food and eating more frequently, so yeah, I think I'm coping with it quite well.....in fact, we're both doing great with it.
