William Brown, a former diplomat to Indonesia for Australia, was sentenced to 13 years on charges of Sexual harassment and Forcible sexual intercourse with a minor.

Thank God.

It doesn't sound like much, but the last foreigner to get charged was only sentenced to less than a year.

For too long places like Indonesia and Thailand have been the savannas of predetory males from Australia and other developed nations.

This man bought a 12 and 15 year old boys for a combined total of 25,000 rupiah (for comparison, 5000 rupiah is less than $1AU).

It is cases such as these that bring to light the true human cost of poverty. Not only are people consigned to lives of privation and starvation, they must also suffer the pointless and horrendous acts that "richer", "powerful" men subject them to so the rest of the family can eat.

The Australian government, and other countries around the world, need to do more to stop this trade in third world souls before it leaves their own borders.

For too long its been a case of not sullying your own house but you can always trash someone elses. To be more explicit - "leave our young alone, but if you can buy them overseas, go for it."

I know that there have been more international efforts to curtail pedophile rings and the movement and production of child pornography, but i think more has to be done to curtail the economic conditions that provide the furtile soil for such "economies" to spring up in Eastern Europe, Russia, South America, China and South East Asia.

Developed countries are the ones who provide the conditions for the establishment of such "markets" and then are the ones to provide the "customers" for such markets but we expect the target countries to get tough on such practices.

Go figure.

This article provides some interesting information on how the sex industry has become integral to the economies of Third-world countries, how these industries are becoming increasingly institutionalised and factored into the economic growth of these countries. There is a particularly disturbing section that speaks of international institutions such as the IMF prompting these countries to enhance and promote their tourist and entertainment industries. For may of these countries we know exactly what these "tourist" and "entertainment" industries revolve around.Link
