Game locks up in Vista.

Somebody help me, please.

Ok, here's the deal, I have a machine that I KNOW can run this, (duo 2.4, 2GB DRR2 800, Nvidia 7950 GTX 1GB), I am running Vista Ultimate x86 (aka 32 bit), and GalCivII DA Gold Eddition. When I play this game in Vista, no matter what I do, it, seeming randomly, locks up. I've tried to pinpoint the reason it happens, and cannot find one, the game just locks up. My system, however, does not, I can still move my cursor, and if I hit esc, and then minimize it (via windows key) and then maximize it (via taskbar) I can *sometimes* manage to save my game, or if I gave a mouse command, do PERHAPS one or two things, (like start a new research track). Sometimes I can do this, sometimes I cannot, all the time the game locks up and will not respond, except for the ability to winkey it, move my cursor, and alt+f4 it. When it locks up like this it just freezes on the screen it was on, (any screen, with or without turn button, research screen, galaxtic map screen, whathaveyou). I thought at first it was because it wasn't updated, so I updated it, and got perhaps 30mins to two hours, (I really don't know, but it was a while, and a huuuuge deal more than I've been able to play continuously for a while). I thought the problem was fixed, but after leaving my pc for a while, and comming back and playing some more, it started having this same problem again. And no matter what I do, it WILL NOT go away. I've tried it in a standard account, admin account, in XP SP2 compatiblity mode, I've tried restarting, restarting and letting the pc sit for a little while, low graphics settings, high graphics settings, from a saved game, new game, auto save every 14 turns, auto save every turn, I'm at wits end, totaly out of ideas. Can anybody help me? Please? I LOVE this game but it is IMPOSSIBLE to play it like this. And btw, I have not noticed similar problems in any other programs that I can think of, but I haven't been doing much gaming other than GalCivII as of late. Thanks for your help in advance, God bless. Dabb out.

Please go to C:\Program Files\Stardock\Totalgaming\GalCiv2 (or wherever you installed the game at), open the debug.err file you find there in notepad, and copy/paste the contents into a post here. If this is a DA report, you'll find the debug in C:\Program Files\Stardock\Totalgaming\GalCiv2\DarkAvatar instead. This will give us some technical information that can help troubleshoot your problem.

Be sure to copy the debug immediately after the error occurs; if you start the game again, the debug will be erased and recreated for the new session.

I went back in to recreate the error and get the report, but it didn't lock up! So I was FORCED to play for like an hour straight...oh the horror.   It did this after I installed the update also, so I'm thinking this isn't going to last, I guess tomorrow I'll be forced to play for a couple more hours without breaks to recreate this problem.

I have the same issue and I have noticed a pattern... it happens after the Random Event: End

Update your video drivers to the latest available on nvidia.com (158.18, AFAIK).

That did the trick.
I had tried updating it with the vista update window but it was saying that it was current. Next time I will know to check out the manufactures web site first.
Thanks for the help.

Yeah, Windows' own driver update system is typically unreliable at best. The manufacturer's website will almost always have better/more recent drivers.
