The Buddha in the Mirror

With palms together,

Good Morning All,

Zazen is the practice of buddhas. It is the very heart of stillness. One practices zazen not to become a buddha, but rather because one is a buddha. Our practice is our realization of this.

In our world, this practice is the same as it was in ancient times: no different. We find a space, take our seat, face a wall, then face ourselves. We are erect, we breathe as we breathe; we experience fully and completely each moment. We notice that good and bad moments are of our own making. We notice our bodies wanting to move. We notice our minds are moving, the world is moving, yet we remain still. We are, indeed, stillness in motion. Where then does peace truly reside?

An North American buddha, a South American buddha, a European buddha, an Asian buddha, an Australian buddha, an African buddha, and an Antarcan buddha: all such buddhas are in your mirror each day looking back at you. The clothes we wear, the work we do: same. Our race, our language, our tastes; they are all the same. They are the colors and tastes of the rainbow of humanity. It is our function in this world to be buddhas.

So, how will you be a buddha in this moment?

Be well.

I like that question. If one follows your advice, being still and living in the moment, I would say, it resides within. Then the realization that "within" might not only mean inside of you, your mind, but can also mean within the world you live in, my world, my surroundings! Interesting thoughts!
