question about adding ship models

hmm I've tried adding a ship model to the game with no success..

I have the model in .x format, named it S4_example for the .x file and placed it in the models folder. I placed all necessary textures in there, and I entered the info in ship components. However, when i go into the game and look at the ships for i see the thumbnail named correctly as my ship, but the thumbnail is black and my ship doesn't show up at all in the viewer either. What have I done wrong?

Unfortuantely it could be any number of things, as there are quite a few options in the .x format. Without further specific details I really couldn't say what the issue might be.

Do you have the required techs for each one?

what do you mean by there being many options in the .x format?

"and I entered the info in ship components"

Which file did you put the info in, and what exactly did you enter?
Also, are you using the mods folders, or did you modify core files?

As Kryo said, a little more detail might help.

When exporting to the X format from a modelling program, there are many options. Or is this a model you found somewhere already made (if so, where?)?

sorry for the trouble, i found out what i did wrong. My exporter had more than one type of .x file type. I tried the other one and it worked, so everything's kosher now

i do have a different question with which i hope you can be of some help. I would like to replace starbases in the game. I don't want to change how they work or anything, just want to replace the models. I realize it will be the same for all races across the board and i'm fine with that. I just want a different look to them and I imagine that going about this would be different than it was with the ships. So, anybody know?

For starbases under DA, you can simply make a ship design in game then replace the starbase's .shipcfg files. So to get entirely new models in is exactly the same.

great! thanks for the tip.

Last question I promise. Is there a limit on how many minor races can be added to the game? I know that in DA you can't have more than 9 in any given game session but what I want to know is can you have a lot more than 9 in the minor race pool from which the generator selects when creating a game?

Cari doesn't think so.

i did what you said with the starbase, i added the .x file and textures to the models folder and in the shipcfg folder i edited the economy starbase files to have the base hull for my new model. It worked and when the constructor made an econ base, there was my new model. However, it was missing its textures. No matter how i tried it it kept showing up without its textures. this sort of thing never happened with my added ship models. Do you know what i possibly did wrong?

What format are the textures, did you rename them, and does the model use multiple textures or just one (GC2 only supports a single texture per model plus lightmap and normal map, AFAIK).
