Nobody knows

It's a little more than 24 hours since Cho Seung-Hui decided that he was going to kill his fellow students and faculty at Virginia Tech, and already the armchair quarterbacking has started.

We've got security 'specialists' squawking about how the campus shouldv'e been on lockdown after the first murders, psychologists, psychiatrists and all kinds of other psych-whatevers spouting theory after theory about Cho's state of mind and what set him off, reporters badgering witnesses into telling them what they say and did.....it seems as if everyone has an opinion about what happened and why. Everyone wants a piece of the action, it seems.

It pisses me off.

The fact of the matter is that NOBODY knows what was going through Cho's mind when he did what he did.  He hasn't left any explanation for what he did - he even went out of his way to make sure indentifying him (dead or alive) would be difficult, carrying no ID of any kind with him when he set about doing what he did.  He was identified by his fingerprints - he was a legal immigrant and, as such, had his fingerprints taken as part of the immigration process.  Were it not for that, it might have taken a lot longer to ID him - he had no criminal record and therefore would have had no reason to have his prints on file with any agency.

Nobody knows WHY he did what he did.  NOBODY.....and anyone who tells you that they do is a blatant liar.  Speculation is rife, as it always is when events such as these unfold, but it's purely that - speculation.

People seem to need to find a reason for the actions of murderers and terrorists and other evil-doers.  It's as if they can't start to heal until they understand why the perpetrators did what they did, they don't seem to be able to comprehend and accept that sometimes people do horrible things just because they can.  Sometimes there isn't a reason; sometimes shit just happens and there isn't any rhyme or reason or force behind it.

Sometimes shit happens.  Sometimes bad things happen to good people, and there isn't any reason for it.  The best we can do is accept it and then try to move on.

Sometimes shit happens, and nobody knows why.

*I'm not a praying person, but my heart goes out to the families and friends of those killed yesterday - including Cho's parents, who probably don't deserve the criticism that will undoubtedly be coming their way.  As parents, we all believe that our children will grow up to be productive citizens, not the kind of people who massacre other human beings simply because they felt like it.  No doubt Cho's parents felt the same way about their boy.*

I'm not disputing you, so please don't get me wrong. I thought he left a "disturbing note" in his dorm room. I haven't been able to watch the news since this morning, so that may have turned out to be false. I was just wondering if this had turned out to be false information.

Also, it was a very good article. Thanks for writing it.

I completely agree. It drives me batshit when these armchair experts start spouting off after the fact. I just want to say if you knew so much, why didn't you open your mouths before and save some lives.

Yeah, good article.
