Lynndie England: Misguided trailer-trash?

Lynndie England: Misguided trailer-trash?

I've been following with interest the furor of reports surrounding the fate of Lynndie England, the female Army Reservist pictures absuing and torturing Iraqi POW's.

It made me wonder how this small-town girl from West Virginia came to such notoriety.  What series of unfortunate events led her to be pictured grinning like a loon, cigarette hanging from her slack-jawed mouth, pointing to the genitals of a naked, hooded man?  How did she come to have her photo taken dragging another naked Iraqi around by a leash?

I think that a general lack of common sense coupled with a lack of appropriate supervison and poor leadership all contributed to Lynndie's downfall. First of all, she isn't an MP.  She was 'attached' to the 372nd Military Police Company, but her actual training is reportedly as a personnel clerk.  She was just a warm body filling a spot. Secondly, there was an obvious lack of supervision and leadership at that facility.  The mere fact that she's pregnant by one of her superiors speaks volumes. And how did she, a female, come to be allowed into that kind of circumstance in a male facility anyway?  According to the former NCO In Charge of our local military confinement facility, while female officers are permitted to work with male inmates, common sense dictates and military procedure forbids that they put themselves in certain circumstances around male prisoners....because of the risk of both impropriety and the female officer's safety. The fact that a number of the personnel there are both pictured and implicated again, speaks volumes to the quality of the leadership. Thirdly, there was a lack of training and equipment.  SSgt Chip Frederick, another of the people charged, states that they didn't even have a copy of the Geneva Convention's rules regarding the proper treatment of prisoners.

So, we have a veritable litany of errors to fall back on...or do we?  The bottom line is this: no-one coerced Lynndie into behaving that way. No-one put a gun to her head and made her do it.  She did it, she should take responsibility for her actions.  Yes, there were somewhat extenuating circumstances...but there is no excuse for the scenarios depicted in those photgraphs. None.

Lynndie dug her own grave when she posed for those pictures.  And with Rumsfeld taking the heat for her actions, you can be sure it will be a deep, dark one.

May I politley suggest that you engage your brain before opening your mouth?!

Dharma--that was funny...have you noticed an increase in anonymous trolling as of late?  It seems to be popping up everywhere...highly annoying.  It's pointless to argue because it is clear that they aren't reading what was written in the first place.  argh!

Yes, Shades,  I have, and it's really irritating.  It seems that people are just looking to start arguments..like you said, it's blatantly obvious at times that they're not even reading the article they're commenting on.

Try as I might to resist the tempation, I sometimes let myself get lured into responding to these idiots.

Oh, and thanks, Smartaz!  I try, you know?

I like this whole notion of the new accountablty. Great. All I have to do is let my kids run wild, destroy the neighborhood and then just say they are accountable for their action not me as the superior. Just let my workers run a muck after all, I did not tell to to run a muck. I love this new concept. Sit back, relax, maybe play a few rounds of golf. YEA BABY

what should be asked is who those other pairs of boots belonged to when those pics were taken. This is no isolated incident and is a testament to what the US is doing to the Iraqi people. I understand you all don't want to believe the US mission in Iraq is ugly and based on lies you all believed. It's been a fiasco from start to today.... Lmao. Now the Iraqi army who fought the GI's are in control of Fallujah. Man those guys are tough fighters to take on the US Marines then take control of the very city the Marines backed away from. It's lunacy and all real Americans should be ashamed.

Miki: There are more people than just Lynndie involved in this, as I already said. 6 people so far, with more being implicated every day.  You seem to want to accuse the entire US military of being involved in these acts.  THAT'S lunacy.

no not the entire forces. You don't care, but most of the entire planet believe the US started it's road to Iraqi war crimes they very instant they invaded a sovereign country which posed no threat to America. And I'm one of them. I knew Iraq wasn't a threat. You all were biting your nails all the while pretending to be avenging 911. Not me. I was trying to de-pussify the general blogging populations that they shouldn't be taken in by the WMD lie. But oh no I was a prick for 'bedding Hussein' and the like. What a load of shit. And your guys are there in it now. Dying every day. but you see, it's normality now. Who the fuck gives a shit about a couple GI's who die from some liberating welcoming committee? No one. Except their families. Tell me Dharm, if your hubby was ever captured by the Iraqi's, would you expect him to be treated well now? It's telling that that loser Halliburton guy who was a hostage..he received medical care, not dogs on the balls while naked. Fucking Americans torturing those poor innocent Iraqis. It's a huge war crime.

Mikimouse:

Your point might be better received if you toned down the foul language and the rhetoric.  We all got it, you think that the war in Iraq is bad.  You don't help your point by calling Thomas Hamill "that loser Halliburtion guy," or by implying that every member of the military is involved in torturing Iraqis.  You sound like a ranting lunatic--try approaching the subject matter like an adult and you might get somewhere.  I think that it was VES who told you the "hahaha" and "lmao" weren't really appropriate given the subject matter.  I have a hard time accepting your self-appointed position on the moral high ground given your sophmoric approach to these issues.

Dharma:  Sorry for the brief hijacking of your thread.

You don't care

Don't assume things about me, please. If I say I don't care, you can quote me.  Until then, don't.

I knew Iraq wasn't a threat.

Really? You had some magical power that the rest of the world didn't have that allowed you to see that?  Wow, you ought to think about hiring yourself out to governments and such, you'd be a millionaire!

Tell me Dharm, if your hubby was ever captured by the Iraqi's, would you expect him to be treated well now?

No, but then again I wouldn't have expected him to have been treated well in the first place. Considering this nation's record of atrocities committed against it's own people I wouldn't expect them to treat an 'outsider' better than one of their own.

It's telling that that loser Halliburton guy who was a hostage..he received medical care, not dogs on the balls while naked.

And you were there, present at the de-brief, were you Miki?  You heard, along with the CIA and MI, exactly what that man said about what happened during his time as a hostage? Unless you were in the room, you couldn't know. Oh, I forgot, it's that magical power you have at work again.

No need to apologize, Shades.

no need for magical power to know Iraq was never a threat people. I never said I had any magical powers, only a sane rational mind. Hussein's Iraq didn't have the capabilities to do what the US was saying. Give me a fucking break. "Iraq has drones that can reach the shores of the United States..". Lmao. And you all fell for it! That's what's so fascinating about this hijacking of reality. What the fuck did Iraq do to make the US scared? 911 was but never should have been a factor in any invasion plans, but it's what made the wholesale slaughter of Iraq passable and even agreeable to all of you guys. Every single point the US made for it's justification has turned out to be a blatant falsehood. All of them. And to top it off they're torturing the same ones they pretended to want to help and free. This is horrible what's happening in Iraq and you all should be demanding the troops to be brought home.

No I was the one who said that.  Sane and rational by whose standards, Miki? The way you've been ranting recently makes me wonder.

This was an article about one red-neck girl and her role in the abuse and torture of Iraqi POW's.  I'd like to keep it that way.  I'm not going to debate the reasons the US is there with you Miki, the fact is we are there.

focusing on one aspect or one party involved in this or any other collaborative event--especially one so complex, outrageous and potentially volatile as this--is a time-tested journalistic technique. after rereading the original post, i can't see why anyone would conclude you're assessing relative culpability.

let my workers run a muck after all, I did not tell to to run a muck

hopefully the quotee takes time to ensure those employees possess valid commercial muck licenses before giving them the keys

YOU may not conclude that, no.......but this isn't a forum for discussion about the reasons the US went to Iraq, nor is it a place for Miki to vent his spleen about how he could see what others could not.  Miki has his own blog to do that on...and he does so with gusto, I might add.

having trouble sending will keep at it........

where can one see these pictures you refer to in this article?

I got 2 from you...I'll keep looking for another one!

The pictures I have links to are the ones that have already been seen in the news.  There are more; whether they'll be released or not remains to be seen.  Some of them are apparently too graphic, involving corpses, simulated rape and other nasties.

Had you not seen them before, Marc?

It IS disturbing, you're right.
