Windowed Mode?

Just curious if there is a windowed mode for GalCiv. Can ya play in a window, and how do you do it? Thanks!

yes. You download it from SDCentral after you've gotten the rest down. You then have to switch your desktop to 16bit color and then run it from command line. But yea, it's how I play the game 99% of the time.

There is. You can install it and run it from StarDockCentral. Just make sure your desktop is set to 16bit colour.

yes, it's possible if one is using a resolution bigger than 1024*768. need to set it to 16-bit colors tho.
It's a separate, unsupported, exe-file to start the game with, it can be found on the galciv-directory after installing the window-build through SDC.

You don't have to run it from the command line -- at least, I don't. I created a shortcut to the .exe and called the shortcut "Galciv Windowed" and it works fine.

You do have to set the desktop color depth to 16 bits, which is sub-optimal but not a big deal. I wish the window was resizable and had a minimize button, but heck, it's nice to have the windowed option there.

p.s. How do I set a nickname for posting? Not totally wild about having my full real name at the top of every discussion post here...

Why does the desktop have to be in 16-bit mode?

Because the game is in 16 bit color and it won't run otherwise when it's windowed. When it's fullscreen it doesn't matter. Do you want a more technical explanation than that?

Perhaps directX games are different in that they do not create palettes. I would have thought thatI could run a 16-bit color application with my desktop set to 32-bit color.

You can alt-tab out of the 'normal' version, in any case. Works fine for me, very little pause between swapping windows. :)
