Can ships of different races occupy the same space?

I tried to block another race's colony ship with my USS Mockingbird just to see what would happen. The
colony ship didn't even seem to notice that my ship was there. Then I moved off and back onto the same
tile with the other guy's colony ship. No error messages, to attacks, no blockage, nothing except ships
from two races occupying the same tile.

Jack

space is big. I think two non-armed vessels SHOULD be able to occupy the same sector

jlegere,

Yes in the same sector, but ship moves from tile to tile onw move at a time. A sector is
12 tiles by 12 tiles. (I asked Cari what to call tiles a long time ago.) Previous
behavior of GalCiv is that ships from differing races could not occupy the same tile.
Do you think this should be changed?

Um, I think if one of the ships has no attack value it's possible. Ships that can attack each other can't occupy the same space because otherwise it really messes up with the hit detection, and the explosion animation would be confusing.

Didn't happen that way on the OS/2 versions. Nor on any other strategy game, board or PC, that
I have ever played. Also, I have not gotten to where I could try it with attack ships, so I
have to wonder about them. I am trying to get there now, but am having trouble re-loading the
game (load crashes at ..... thread). I may have to start a new game tomorrow morning.

Non combat ships in the same sector sound reasonable. It may just be simpler to only allow one ship in a single sector. Otherwise I could see interesting situations where your colony ship gets destroyed by an ally who attacked another races colony ship which was sharing your sector.
This would allow for planet blocking tactics (surround a planet with cheap ships and no-one else can move there with out attacking, or move out).

John: delete your Event.civ files from your SavedGames\Test\ folder or SavedGames\AutoSave\ depending on which one is giving you trouble.

Paul: if you couldn't have friendly ships occupy the same tile (sectors are marked by the green lines) then you could have friendly ships messing up pathfinding, and potentially not have ships leave orbit.

Cari,
I certainly have no problem with friendly ships occupying the samne space. Would it be possible to change the ship icon when more than one ship occupy the same space to make it clearer? Also how will this work will allied / friendly races? Will their ships also occupy the same space and will the image change to make this easily seen?

Sometimes I want to declare war on a "friend" by attacking that race's ship (a sneak attack). How do we
do this if friendly ships can occupy the same tile?

Got it!

This is happening because manually moving ships is not working write. I built a starfighter and used
it to attack a colony ship. The starfighter moved into the tile of the colony ship and THEN the colony
ship exploded. Prior to this build the attacking ship would only attack the other ship and not move.
Now it is moving before it is checking for any interference to the move.

You attacked a colony ship of one of the aliens?
ooh!! that will lead you down the road to an evil life.

Cari,

Yep. Why not? We were at war. It might have been after a system I wanted.

Think of those 10 million aliens who died! sob sob! They were innoncent civilians!
Nah. They were stormies in disguise. Just because they might get to a system
before I do doesn't make them civilians.

Hey Paul, do you read Turtledove?

Attacking a star with an orbiting ship gives the same results as before this built: The attack does not
cost a move for the attacking ship, it can attack continually as long as it doesn't have to expend all
of its moves and there are ships to attack (I thing the OS/2 version allowed the same thing?), and a
transport can not capture the star until the next turn (also the same as in previous builds).

Turtledove?

I'm afraid I haven't heard of it.

John, I wasn't being critical, I just wanted clarification. I should also clarify that by "friendly" ship I mean one of your own ships. You can't occupy the same space as an alien attack ship. (Or at least you shouldn't be able to.)

I think that there must be "ghost" ships in the planet that aren't allowing the transport to take over.

Sorry, Cari,

My fault. Some of the other posts got mixed up in my response.

The colony ship was that of another race.

Another manfistation of this problem is that sometimes my ship will move into the enemy's ship's tile before attacking, and sometimes
it will attack and not move (I prefer the latter action).

My ships usually move onto the tile and then the enemy blows up. This I think makes more sense than long range battles. It does need to be consistent either way though.

Paul,
Wouldn't a ship moving into the debree field of a distroyed ship suffer damage from the debree? It just doesn't make sense to me.
Besides, if you read Brad's philosophy a sihp can keep attacking until it looses all of its hit points. They are not supposed to
move until told to move into an empty tile.

A ship tile is the same size as a solar system! I think a ship could avoid the debree. This is why I feel that ships should move onto the same tile. SHooting at another ship for a light year away sounds fairly daft. It is a game though, so whatever works best from a game perspective should be chosen.

I must admit that I personally would like all tiles shrunk to half their height and width, movement values increased by 2, and solar systems take up 4 tiles. This would allow for a less cluttered map when lots of ships are present and also for more strategic movement. It would require ship icons to be shrunk though and may be too much hassle to program.

Hmm intresting, that tile-change sounds fair enough. altho it might be hard to implement within the current-timefram, I guess, so it would definatly be something to consider for the 2nd relase IMO.

Don't forget how this worked in the original GalCiv and in the early alpha builds. This behavior is not consistant on this level (I have seen many
times where this did NOT happen) and could have been a bug introduced by another change in ship behavior (it started at the same time that autopilot
moves were changed to the "end" of the turn to give us a better chance to remove them from autopilot).

Also, if the light years difference between ships when attacking without moving bothers you, how do you describe attacking a star system without
moving? It seems that the same conceptual problem exists.
