Proverbs 8

Yay! Somebody actually reads this! :-D

BibleGateway is being uncooperative today, so hopefully this will work OK....

OK, here we go: Link

v. 2-3 -- Solomon is making the point here that Wisdom is not hiding out in some cave where only the diligent or lucky can find her. Wisdom is not like a milk snake. Wisdom is like a robin. She's obvious. She makes herself known. It reminds me of what Paul said - that God has clearly made himself known to us by His creation, which leads us to the Bible. Those who go running off after various philosophies and things like that are only making it hard for themselves because they're ignoring the obvious.

v. 19 -- The fruit of wisdom is more enjoyable than great riches. You know, we look at people like sports players, and we say, "Look at those greedy selfish people. They're already making millions of dollars a year, and all they ever do is whine about stuff." Well, you know why? It's because ultimately money doesn't satisfy. When God gives us wisdom, we can use it to seek out those things that do satisfy.... and we will be much happier than if we were filthy rich and foolish.

v. 22-26 -- Wisdom is an everlasting principle. We would do well to realize that we ourselves are not cabable of discovering true wisdom on our own. After all, wisdom existed before time. In fact, God used wisdom to create us. How then can philosophers presume to find wisdom through diligent thought and discussion? The fact of the matter is that we can only discover wisdom through God teaching it to us. Otherwise, it would be like a garden snail trying to learn algebra.

v. 31 -- Now here's an interesting concept - Wisdom's "delight being with the sons of men". I would dare say that Wisdom is not too overly delighted with the state of mankind right now. But we must remember that we are the highlight of God's creation. He made stars, planets, galaxies, comets, trees, birds, fish, snakes, and countless other cool stuff.... but we were the culmination of it all. Only we were made in the image of God. And someday those who have accepted Christ will return to their former perfect state.

v. 36 -- There's more to being wise than simply following God because He said so. God has our best interests at heart. When we follow Him we're making our own lives better in the long run, and when we don't follow Him, we're making our lives less happy and less fulfilling. Why would anyone want to do that to himself? I guess it all boils down to people thinking that they know what's going on better than God does. How silly is that? God used wisdom to create the entire universe. Can we do that? No. But we think we know wisdom better than He does.
